REMINDER: Firecracker permit applications available through Dec. 31
LĪHU‘E – Kaua‘i Fire Department officials remind the public that firecracker permit applications will be available through Dec. 31.
To apply for a firecracker permit, please follow the instructions below. A smartphone or tablet is recommended for the application process to facilitate uploading a photo ID.
- Visit https://connect.kauai.gov, click on the “Kaua‘i Fire Department” icon, and then click the “Firecracker Permit” icon.
- If approved, the permit will be emailed to you.
- Print the permit and bring it to the Kaua‘i Fire Department Headquarters at 4444 Rice Street, Suite 315, in Līhu‘e, from now until Dec. 31, 2024, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. (closed on Christmas day).
- If you need assistance creating a Kauai.gov account or don’t have a printer, Fire Department staff can assist you with applying and collecting payment at Kauai Fire Department Headquarters
- Payments: Online payments are available at connect.kauai.gov. Cash and checks can be made in person at the Fire Department. Checks must be made out to the Director of Finance.
- Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
- All Permits printed on connect.kauai.gov need to be validated in person at Kaua‘i Fire Department HQ.
In addition, officials remind the public that fireworks and firecrackers may only be ignited on private property between 9 p.m. on Dec. 31 and 1 a.m. on Jan. 1.
Only licensed pyro-technicians with proper permits are authorized to ignite aerial fireworks.
Although the following items are classified as firecrackers, no permit is required to purchase them: snakes, sparklers, fountains, cylindrical or cone fountains, whistles, toy smoke devices, wheels and ground spinners, and other similar products.
The Kaua‘i Fire Department reminds the public that setting off fireworks and firecrackers on public property, including streets, sidewalks, or parks is illegal. Removing the powder or pyrotechnic contents from any fireworks is prohibited.
Fireworks should only be ignited on a smooth, flat surface away from buildings, dry vegetation, and flammable materials.
The public is advised that all aerial luminaries, also known as flying lanterns or flying luminaries, are prohibited in the State of Hawai‘i, per HRS 132-19.
The Kaua’i Fire Department advises everyone to exercise caution when igniting firecrackers, follow the listed instructions, and ensure that children are under adult supervision at all times.
