KPD urges community to take precautions to protect against vehicle break-ins
LĪHUʻE – The Kauai Police Department takes action to inform the public of preventative measures in light of recent vehicle break-ins.
Recently, there has been a surge in vehicle break-in incidents at the trailheads of popular hiking spots in the Kapa‘a and North Shore areas. These incidents typically involve breaking into parked vehicles to steal valuable items left behind by unsuspecting victims. Common targets include electronic devices, wallets, purses and other valuables that are easily visible within the vehicle.
“We encourage everyone to be safe as they enjoy Kaua‘i’s great outdoor spaces,” said Assistant Chief Kalani Ke. “We are urging residents and visitors to take the necessary precautions to minimize the risk of being targeted by opportunistic criminals.”
Important safety tips to protect yourself and your property include:

Do Not Leave Valuables in Your Vehicle: Before leaving your vehicle unattended, ensure that all valuable items are either taken with you or stored out of sight in the trunk or glove compartment. Visible valuables tempt thieves and increase the likelihood of a break-in.

Park in Well-Lit and Visible Areas: Whenever possible, park your vehicle in well-lit and highly visible areas, especially at trailheads and hiking areas. Avoid secluded or poorly lit parking spots that may provide cover for criminal activity.

Lock Your Vehicle: Always lock your vehicle and close all windows before leaving. Even if you plan to be away for just a short time, taking this simple step can deter opportunistic thieves.

Report Suspicious Activity: Be vigilant and report any suspicious individuals or activities near trailheads or parking areas to local law enforcement immediately by calling KPD Dispatch at 808-241-1711. If it is an emergency, call 911. Your prompt reporting can help prevent further incidents and assist in apprehending suspects.
“By staying informed, remaining vigilant, and taking proactive measures to protect our belongings, we can work together to deter criminals and maintain the safety and security of our neighborhoods,” emphasized Assistant Chief Ke. “Let's work together to keep our vehicles and belongings safe. Remember, your actions can make a difference in preventing crime in our community.”
