Officials advise no swimming at Makua Beach due to shark siting
HĀ‘ENA– Ocean Safety Bureau officials are advising no swimming at Makua Beach, also known as Tunnels, in Hā‘ena, until further notice due to a shark siting.
OSB officials report that a roughly 8-foot shark was sighted in the channel at Makua Beach Sunday afternoon. The type of shark is unknown. No injuries were reported.
As a safety precaution, Ocean Safety officials have posted warning signs and will continue to monitor the area.
Lifeguards will reassess the area on Monday, and will reopen the beach to swimming at 12 p.m. if there are no other sightings.
Updates will be provided if more information becomes available.
