Hiker dies at Waipo‘o Falls; Police identify victim
KŌKEʻE – The Kaua‘i Police Department have identified a 66-year-old male who died at Waipo‘o Falls in Kōkeʻe on Friday as Mark Debarr of California.
According to a preliminary report, first responders received a report of a male falling off Waipo‘o Falls Trail shortly after 10:10 a.m. Friday. The hiker apparently fell off the trail and was located approximately 120 feet below the Waipo‘o Falls.
Personnel with the Kaua‘i Police Department, Kaua‘i Fire Department, including firefighters with the Waimea fire station, Air 1, Rescue 3, and the on-duty Battalion Chief, assisted in recovering the victim.
Foul play is not suspected in Mr. Debarr’s death, and an autopsy is pending.
Volunteers with Life’s Bridges, a grief counseling service, and (VASK), a nonprofit that provides emergency needs for visitors, are assisting the victim’s family.
