Man found dead in home following fire
KAUMAKANI – Kaua‘i police responded to an unattended death after a man was found dead in his home following a structure fire Monday morning.
Police have preliminarily identified the man, however DNA testing will be done to confirm his identity. According to police, foul play is not a suspected factor in the cause of his death.
At approximately 5:15 a.m. on Monday, firefighters were dispatched to a structure fire on Kaumakani Avenue. Upon their arrival, they found a single-family dwelling fully engulfed in flames.
As firefighters gained control of the fire, they discovered a deceased male in one of the rooms. Once the fire was fully extinguished, the scene was turned over to Kaua‘i police and fire inspectors with the Kaua‘i Fire Prevention Bureau for further investigation.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the man died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
An autopsy is pending, and the incident remains under investigation.
