JOINT MĀNOA STREAM FLOOD MITIGATION BEGINS MONDAY, AUG. 3

HONOLULU – The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) announces the start of flood mitigation activities at Mānoa Stream beginning Monday, Aug. 3 near Woodlawn Drive. HDOT is coordinating the flood mitigations outside of its area of responsibility with the City and County of Honolulu Department of Facility Maintenance (DFM). Mitigation work will include removal of trees, rocks and brush along the streambed and existing walls, regrading slopes adjacent to the stream and dredging within the stream to reestablish the channel bottom.
Beginning Monday, Aug. 3 crews will work Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. to clear the streambed over a four-and-a-half-month schedule, weather permitting. The first phase of the work will take place near the baseball fields at Mānoa District Park. Crews will begin on the downstream portion of the stream adjacent to the park and work upstream toward the Kahaloa Drive bridge. This first phase is expected to take about two months..
The Second Phase is estimated to take place between late September through mid-October, near Woodlawn Drive. Crews will begin downstream of the bridge by the USDA fruit fly laboratory and UH Housing Apartments and work their way upstream toward the Woodlawn Drive bridge. Crews will then move upstream of Woodlawn Drive toward the McDonald’s area from mid-October through early December.
Phase Three will take place from mid-October through early December, on the portion of the stream between Mānoa Marketplace and Mānoa Innovation Center. Crews will begin their work on at the Woodlawn Drive bridge and work upstream toward the McDonald's area.
Funding for the Mānoa Stream work and other stream mitigations will be provided through a $9.5 million allocation from the state’s Major Disaster Fund as authorized by Governor Green and the state legislature.
Special duty police officers will be on-site to assist with traffic control and safety procedures. Electronic message boards will be posted to notify motorists of the planned closures. For questions on the mitigation work, residents are encouraged to contact DFM at 808-766-3343.
