Want to know what 4,000 feet looks like? For about three quarters of a mile on each end of Runway 8L at the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) is being widened. Runway 8L is the longest of HNL's four runways and is the primary runway used for arriving aircraft.
Work in progress. The widening of 8L is crucial to preserve the structural integrity of the pavement and the widening will allow Aircraft Design Group VI (i.e., 747-800 and A380) to safely land at HNL. |
Crews are currently working on Stages 2 and 3 and the work should wrap up by May 26, reopening for air traffic on May, 27.
Runway 8L has 11,000 feet of runway available for landings and departures, that's more than two miles!
