LIHUE LESSONS

It's a growing problem our airports are having to deal with...The rise in peer-to-peer car rentals being illegally parked on airport grounds.

It's illegal because you have to have a permit to do commercial business at any of our 15 airports statewide.

The team over at Lihue Airport (LIH) has found a creative way to handle the rise in popularity of apps like Turo. With help from then State Representative and current Airports Deputy Director Jimmy Tokioka, LIH connected Turo with rental agents to secure four off-site parking lots for people to leave their cars to be rented. This solution frees up parking spaces for residents needing to fly out of LIH and reduces the illegal activities in our parking lots.

Peer-to-peer rentals left in airport parking lots are susceptible to theft because parking tickets and keys are left with the unattended vehicle. This has led to a rash of car thefts at Kahului Airport (OGG) on Maui. 28 vehicles have been stolen in the last three months, most of those illegally parked peer-to-peer rentals. Our partners over at the Maui Police Department have helped out in a big way with patrols, citing, and towing away abandoned vehicles.

OGG staff are coordinating with Turo and Turo has agreed to place a notice not to park on airport property. Stay tuned and we will keep you updated about the issue.

A recent Turo posting noted that it is illegal to park cars on OGG property and the possible fine and or two you could face in doing so.

Daniel K. Inouye International Airport is searching for solutions to the Turo issue as well.

Emergency work on Likelike Highway required full closures over two weekends

HDOT crews worked overtime on the weekends of March 11-12 and 18-19 as a large drainage system along Likelike Highway needed an emergency replacement. Checking out how deep they had to trench.

And once the old pipes were cleaned out these BIG BOYS were ready to be put in place.

Not kidding about BIG just check out the construction workers for scale.

Once it was all done, in with the fill, paving it back over and good as new. Congratulations to the crews that did such a great job!!!

Honolulu Harbor Plan

HDOT and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is asking for input into alternatives to improve Honolulu Harbor. We're looking for comment on ship navigation, safety in the harbor, or possible resilience improvements.

The 30-day public comment period is from April 1 to May 1.

Drug Take Back Initiative

Lots of us probably have old prescription drugs laying around the house. If you are looking to responsibly dispose of your prescriptions the National Prescription Drug Take Back Initiative is happening on Saturday, April 22, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at locations all across the state.
