Valdosta Fire Department Monthly Newsletter |
|
Welcome to The Second Alarm, the Valdosta Fire Department's Monthly Newsletter. The objective of this newsletter is to communicate information to our members and the citizens we serve. Communications in any organization are pivotal to its success. Though this newsletter does not replace the day to day communication within our organization, we hope this newsletter will aid in sharing valuable information about our department to you. This is YOUR department! We continue to provide you service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year. Our doors are open at the stations. Please stop in at your neighborhood station and say hi.

![valor service dogs](https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/fancy_images/GAVALDOSTA/2022/07/6125751/4213605/valor-service-dogs_crop.jpg) We love receiving visits from the Valor Service Dogs! Betty and Bradley showered our firefighters with hugs and slobbery kisses while also showing off their trained talents. Valor Service Dogs not only visit as service support to firefighters but to accumulate dogs in training for different environments and sensory experiences.
We were honored to participate in Valdosta State University’s public safety training exercise. VSU staff and students used special effects materials, or moulage, to create lifelike injuries and wounds for a realistic triaging and emergency preparedness training.
This was a joint initiative with the Lowndes County Emergency Management, Lowndes County Sheriff's Office, South Georgia Medical Center, Moody AFB, Valdosta Police Department, and other emergency response agencies.

Hosting station tours are one of the highlights of careers because we are able to interact with our community and inspire the little ones.
![OPAT](https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/fancy_images/GAVALDOSTA/2022/07/6125724/4213609/opat_crop.jpg) Our firefighters always have fun, even during their Occupational Physical Agility Test (OPAT)! The OPAT evaluates a firefighter's ability to perform physically demanding tasks successfully. Firefighters test their upper and lower body strength and aerobic endurance. Thank you to Crunch Fitness for hosting our OPAT!
