Message from the Chief

Welcome to The Second Alarm, the Valdosta Fire Department's Monthly Newsletter. The objective of this newsletter is to communicate information to our members and the citizens we serve. Communications in any organization are pivotal to its success. Though this newsletter does not replace the day to day communication within our organization, we hope this newsletter will aid in sharing valuable information about our department to you. This is YOUR department! We continue to provide you service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year. Our doors are open at the stations. Please stop in at your neighborhood station and say hi.

Our Station 5 crew helped pick up litter during the City Semi Annual Hot Spot Clean Up in the Tyndall Drive Area!

We always enjoy helping out at the #LoveWhereYouLive Cleanups! Community service is a huge part of what we do here at VFD.

The Valdosta Fire Department recently established a new initiative within their Community Risk Reduction (CRRP) Program that aids in its goal to take preventative action and reduce hazards around the city.

Through the new Fall Prevention Program, residents can contact the Fire Department to request an appointment for a home survey. A trained member of VFD will assess the potential fall risks and recommend simple and effective home modifications to prevent them from occurring. Anyone can call and request an appointment for not only themselves but a loved one so long as the resident has given their consent to participate. VFD will not enter any home without expressed permission from the owner as the program is voluntary.

October is Fire Prevention Month, and our Department was busy educating students all about fire safety!

We love being able to educate and interact with all the kiddos. Thank you to the schools and facilities that allowed us to come out!

Our fire safety puppet pals had a blast meeting kids at the Valdosta Mall during Fire Prevention Month. We couldn't have picked a better venue!

The Valdosta Police Department and the Valdosta Fire Department are collecting donations for their annual Shop with a Cop and Shop with a Firefighter programs.

So far, both organizations have received a generous donation from Country Financial.

Police Chief Leslie Manahan and Fire Chief Brian Boutwell accepted a check donation from Georgia Beer Company and 8 Finger Jack Food Truck for the recent Valdosta-Lowndes Cornhole Tournament. More than $800 was raised during the event and will now be put into the City of Valdosta First Responder fund, benefitting the four first responders injured in the July 12 incident on Madison Highway.

As an extra measure to keep the city safe, Valdosta Fire crews were out last month conducting their annual hose testing.

The crew removed the hoses from the engine, tested them under pressure, and checked them thoroughly before loading them back on to the truck.

This process is repeated on each fire engine to ensure that the equipment functions properly and is ready to be used at any and all fire-related emergencies that the crew may encounter.

Pinevale Elementary School students did an incredible job decorating their doors for Fire Prevention Week!

Though the competition was tough, the first-place winner was Dr. Danielle Croft's first-grade class for their spot-on messaging and creativity.

Judges Fire Chief Brian Boutwell, City Councilman Tim Carroll, and Fire Safety Educator Sherina Ferrell had a blast during their visit.

As a special surprise, all participating classrooms received delicious cupcakes to thank them for their efforts to help spread awareness about fire safety.

On October 6, members from the city's Public Safety Departments, along with Police Chief Leslie Manahan and Fire Chief Brian Boutwell, gathered at Just Love Coffee Cafe to chat with residents.

A big thank you to Just Love for hosting Coffee with the Chiefs!

CFAA News

CFA Alumni—Meeting

Tuesday, November 9 at the Emergency Operations Center (250 Douglas St, Valdosta, GA 31601) beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Events must be presented at general meetings and approved to be added to the calendar or by special request through the Chief and the VFD.
