Douglasville City Council Adopts Shelter in Place Order
(Douglasville, GA) – In a further effort to stop the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19), the Douglasville City Council held a special-called meeting by teleconference on Thursday, March 26 at 4:30 p.m. This special-called meeting came one day after the Douglas County Board of Health held an emergency meeting, which issued a “shelter in place” order for Douglas County.
"The citizens have overwhelmingly asked the Council to look out for their interests during this pandemic," Mayor Robinson stated. "This shelter in place order looks out for those residents and encourages all citizens to stay at home unless they have to get out for essential needs.
The City Council unanimously voted to adopt an Emergency Ordinance to include provisions of the Executive Order made by the Douglas County Board of Health on March 25. Specifically, the ordinance requires that all businesses enforce social distancing practices, which limits gatherings to groups of 10 people, keep a minimum distance of six feet between individuals, among other recommendations. The ordinance additionally limits the hours of operation of non-essential services from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Finally, the approved ordinance suggests that residents shelter in place (except for essential activities). The regulation remains in effect until April 10.
“This order is a very difficult thing to do and is not taken lightly,” Mayor Robinson explained. “Seeing the updated numbers of those affected each and every day, it is extremely difficult. I appreciate the support of the entire council, and I believe I speak on the council’s behalf by saying that we are intending to preserve lives, support our local businesses, and protect citizens as best we can.”
