NEWS RELEASE November 26, 2013
St. Simons North Beach Placed Under Advisory;
Jekyll St. Andrews Beach Advisory Remains
GLYNN COUNTY, GA ¬– North Beach at Goulds Inlet (15th Street to 10th Street) on St. Simons Island has been placed under advisory by the Glynn County Health Department. St. Andrews Beach (Macy Lane to St. Andrews picnic area) on Jekyll Island remains under advisory. These advisories are only for the area(s) specified above and do not impact any other beaches on the islands. These beach water advisories are to alert the public of a possible risk of illness associated with water contact but do not mean the beaches are closed.
Routine water quality tests from samples taken November 25, 2013 at those locations showed a high level of enterococci bacteria which increase the risk of gastrointestinal illness in swimmers.
The Glynn County Health Department recommends you do not swim or wade in the water in the area(s) under advisory. Fish and other seafood caught from these areas should be thoroughly washed with fresh water and thoroughly cooked before eating as should fish or seafood caught from any waters.
The areas will be retested on December 3 and the advisories will be lifted when tests show the bacteria levels meet the Environmental Protection Agency’s recommended standards.
