Congratulations on your selection to hunt at the Dan Denton Waterfowl Area at Oconee Wildlife Management Area. Before heading out to go hunting, there are a few things that you need to know.

You can scout the area at any time, but you cannot set up for the hunt until the day of your selected hunt and not before 5 a.m. on the day of the hunt. Impoundment #1 is located just north of GA Highway 16 on the west side of the Oconee River in Putnam County. Impoundment #3 is on the south side of the highway. There is a sign-in kioskat the gravel parking lot adjacent to impoundment #1 and you must sign-in before hunting. After hunting, please return to the kiosk and fill out a short questionnaire. Hunting hours are from 30 minutes before legal sunrise until noon. The only exception is for the last Saturday of the season when hunters may hunt until sunset.

There are no permanent blinds on the impoundments, so you must make your own blind if you choose to hunt from a blind. There are no boat ramps, but you are free to use a boat if desired, though most of the impoundments are easily waded in chest waters, and a great majority can be waded in hip boots. However, please be aware that there are some deep areas, especially along the drainage ditches that run adjacent to the dikes and through the willow trees in the middle of the impoundments. If you do use a boat, please use an electric motor, paddles, or a push-pole so as not to unnecessarily spook roosting birds.

If you have any questions, please feel free to call me at 770-918-6416 or e-mail me at don.mcgowan@dnr.state.ga.us. Good luck and be safe!
