The
dog days of summer will be here before you know it, and Georgia’s State Parks
want to make sure Fido has a good time in the great outdoors. By spending time
in parks, dogs and owners will get exercise -- and Fido can enjoy a smorgasbord
of sights and smells.

Camping
What could be more fun to Fido than camping in the woods? More than 40
State Parks have campgrounds which welcome dogs. Pets must be leashed (6
feet or shorter) and accompanied by their owner at all times. Find a camp site near you at GeorgiaStateParks.org/campsites.

Cabins
If Fluffy prefers more creature comforts, bring him along for a cabin
getaway. Many parks have dog-friendly cabins, and advanced reservations

Hiking (and Sniffing) Trails
Nearly every Georgia State Park has walking trails which welcome leashed dogs,
with a few exceptions at Tallulah Gorge and Panola Mountain. Trails range from easy to challenging –

Free Dog Walks
Dogs need exercise just as much as people do, so we partnered with the Georgia
Veterinary Medical Association to encourage dog walking. Vets can give a
“prescription” for a healthy walk, which is redeemable for a $5 parking
pass. (We have even partnered with LifeLine Animal Project to have kids

Challenging Fun for all Ages
If you are looking for a new way to explore the parks this, try the Park
Paddlers Club, ideal for summer weather. Canoe and kayak fans
will love exploring six state parks by waterway, ranging from quiet lakes to
the famed Okefenokee Swamp. Paddlers must complete 22 miles at Crooked
River, George L. Smith, Chattahoochee Bend, Reed Bingham, Stephen C. Foster and
Sweetwater Creek state parks to earn an official bragging-rights

 Junior Ranger Day Camps
Kids ages 6 to 12 are invited to explore Georgia’s wildlife, nature and fascinating history first-hand as they earn their way through four badge levels. Nature hikes, arts and crafts, water games, fishing and outdoor cooking are just a few of the daily camp workshops offered at Georgia’s state parks. With more than a dozen Junior Ranger Day Camps offered through the end of July, kids can meet new friends as they build self-esteem and a sense of accomplishment. And, parents can have the satisfaction of knowing their children are entertained and learning an appreciation for the great outdoors. Families can also pick up a free Junior Ranger Activity Book at any state park or historic site and work through the activity requirements at their own pace. Fort Yargo has some great habitat, including marshland, mixed hardwood Forest, and an expansive open lake. We will look for a variety of birds like woodpeckers, warblers, and wading birds. Vogel State Park – Blairsville
Join the boys of "The Tree Army" as they tell stories of the New Deal era. This is a covered-dish meal with meat and drinks provided by the Vogel Volunteers. Twisted Ankle Marathon

The Twisted Ankle Marathon and Half Marathon is a hilly, technical run through the park and along Taylor's Ridge in the Chattahoochee National Forest. 175 Years: Cherokee Trail of Tears Memorial Service

New Echota Historic Site – Calhoun
In May 1838, State Militia and Federal Troops started the removal of Cherokee Indians from their homeland in Georgia and surrounding states. Join us for a memorial service including speakers from the Cherokee Nation, Eastern Band of Cherokee, United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee and National Trail of Tears Association. Youth Fishing Days at Buck Shoals

Tallulah Gorge State Park – Tallulah Falls
This is a strenuous trek; include hiking down 531 stairs, a river crossing jumping from rock to rock, and climbing boulders along the side of the river to Bridal Veil Falls where you can swim.
