WILD TIMES IN CLAXTON THIS WEEKEND
What may be Georgia’s wildest festival returns this weekend!
The 46th annual Claxton Rattlesnake & Wildlife Festival, set for Saturday and Sunday at the south Georgia city, will feature scores of rattlers and other snakes, plus plenty of wildlife-related exhibits and shows, along with more than 170 food and crafts vendors.
The former rattlesnake roundup organized by the Evans County Wildlife Club drew a record crowd of about 18,000 last year, as news spread that the event would no longer buy and sell rattlesnakes.
Organizations such as DNR, Georgia Southern University’s Center for Wildlife Education and Zoo Atlanta will again support the event. Visitors will enjoy GSU’s birds of prey demonstration, Let’s Get Wild wildlife educational programs, Georgia native wildlife exhibits, a National Wild Turkey Federation-sanctioned turkey-calling contest and a lineup of Staples Safari Zoo animals varying from tigers to camels.
DNR staff will also hold wildlife programs at local elementary schools Friday.
Festival hours are 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday, March 9, and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday, March 10. Admission is $6 for adults; children younger than 5 enter free.
