Tips for Applying for a Deer Quota Hunt

Earlier this year, Wildlife Resources Division launched a new online quota hunt system, which requires all applications to be completed online. The new system eliminates the paper notifications of the past and makes specialty hunt applications, such as Adult/Child, easier.

So far, more than 20,000 people have applied for quota hunts for the 2012 turkey, alligator and dove seasons combined. The WMA & State Park deer quota hunts typically attract about 22,000 applicants statewide, says Brandon Anderson, Hunter Services. You can apply for WMA deer, State Park, Adult/Child deer, and Dog-deer quota hunts now through 11:59 p.m. on Sept. 1. Hunters will be notified via email about their application selection status and can also view their status within their online account, within three business days of the deadline.

APPLY NOW

Anderson offers a few tips for creating a successful quota hunt application:

  • CREATE AN ACCOUNT FIRST: Applicants can get derailed quickly if they fail to create an account in the new system. Under the About tab, see "Instructions - Create an Account." (If you already created an account for turkey, alligator or dove, you do not need to create another account.) The only exception to this is Wheelchair Hunts. These are still administered by regional offices and require a paper application.
  • DON'T SKIP THE INSTRUCTIONS: Be sure to read through the instructions before applying. Under the About tab, see "Instructions - Apply for a Quota Hunt." Information about applying priority points and creating a group application are included in this section.
  • ONLY KIDS CAN APPLY FOR ADULT/CHILD HUNTS: If you're applying for an Adult/Child hunt, it is the CHILD who makes the application. The child needs to have his/her own account to do so. You cannot create an application in the adult's name or view the application from the adult's account.
  • FRIENDS NEED TO CREATE AN ACCOUNT BEFORE YOU CAN ADD THEM TO A GROUP APPLICATION: Can't find your friend in the system? He/she needs to create an account before you can add him/her to your group application. If he/she created an account and you still can't find them, then that person already applied for a hunt. In that case, he/she needs to log on and delete the application before you can add him/her to your group application.
  • DON'T FORGET TO WAGER PRIORITY POINTS: The "Points Wagered" box on the application is where you enter the number of priority points you wish to assign to your application. If you were not selected for a previous year's quota hunt, then you have points available. Go to the Account tab, and click on "My Priorities" to review your priority points.
  • VIEW, CHANGE OR DELETE YOUR APPLICATION ANYTIME UP UNTIL THE DEADLINE: You can review, edit and delete your open application by logging in, going to the Quota Hunt tab and clicking on "APPLY NOW/Open Applications."
