For a mix of yesteryear with Southern hospitality, plan a trip to Hamburg State Park in middle Georgia. At just 741 acres, this tiny getaway is packed with history and charm. A campground offers 32 shaded sites along Hamburg Lake, with hot showers, water and electric hookups, and a dump station. A restored 1921 gristmill is popular with photographers, and anglers can fish for largemouth bass, crappie and bream. Nature lovers can check out the walking trails for a chance to see deer, raccoons, turtles, alligators and other wildlife that call this park home. (Photo by by @wanderingwknds.)

Hikers may be surprised to discover the many benefits of winter hiking. With no leaves on the trees, you can see farther through the woods, appreciating unique tree shapes, small waterfalls, rock outrcrops and bark textures. It’s even easier to spot wildlife like deer. Take advantage of the slow season and you’ll be rewarded with quiet beauty and peaceful solitude. Need a few ideas? Check out these hiking trails ranging from kid-friendly to heart-pumping.
