From cookouts to campouts, we’ll help you celebrate Independence Day in a big way. You’ll find old-timey games and musket firings, plus pools, splash pads and swimming beaches to keep you cool. Visit Jarrell Plantation to hear a reading of the Declaration of Independence at noon, or join guided hikes at Panola Mountain to watch area fireworks from the mountaintop. (Do firecrackers send your dog running for cover? Georgia’s State Parks are a good place to celebrate the 4th since fireworks are not allowed inside state parks.) Located in a graceful bend of the river, Chattahoochee Bend State Park is a haven for paddlers and anglers. At 2,910 acres, it’s one of Georgia’s largest state parks, protecting five miles of river frontage and six miles of wooded trails. The park has just three rental cabins, plus a modern campground. On July 6, join their Hike-and-Paddle excursion where you’ll hike 5.5 miles up the river trail, then float back down to the boat ramp. Find more ranger-led programs like scavenger hunts.
