Stargazing in the Swamp

One of Georgia’s most remote state parks has been designated among the best spots in the world for star gazing. The International Dark Sky Association recently named Stephen C. Foster State Park in the Okefenokee Swamp as a gold-tier “International Dark Sky Park” – the first in Georgia. A December 10 celebration will include a short ceremony followed by an astronomy program. Come join the festivities and save 25% on cottages and 50% on campsites from December 5 until 11. Due to drought, visitors who enjoy boating should call ahead to check water levels and boat tour availability.

Winter Yurt & Camping Deals

Enjoy a peaceful winter wonderland while saving on your wallet. This December and January, save 50% on campsites and 25% on “glamping” yurts, Sunday through Thursday nights. We have RV and tent sites with hot showers, plus equestrian camping for you and your horse. Offer valid from December 1, 2016 to January 31, 2017. Get a $5 gift certificate for every $50 purchase of gift cards for this holiday season. Gift cards can be used for campsites, cabins, yurts, retail, picnic shelters, historic sites, boat rentals, golf and many outdoor activities. Cards may be purchased online, by calling 1-800-864-7275 or at park offices. $5 gift certificates are valid January 2017. $20 minimum must be spent. Must be used at parks. Hardman Farm

Best recognized by its gazebo-topped Indian mound and cow pasture, Hardman Farm Historic Site is a favorite landmark in north Georgia. Visitors can make reservations for guided tours of the beautifully renovated house and large dairy barn. During December, the house is dressed in period holiday décor as part of “A Victorian Christmas In Nacoochee.” On Friday and Saturday nights, twinkling lights illuminate the walk down Unicoi Road. Visitors will also see the bedroom belonging to Anna Ruby Nichols, the namesake of nearby Anna Ruby falls. Call 706-878-1077 for tour reservations.

152nd Winter Muster

Saturday, December 10, 9 a.m. – 7 p.m.

On December 22, 1864, General Sherman presented Savannah as a Christmas gift to President Lincoln, ending his “March to the Sea.” Mark this occasion by watching skirmishes between Confederates and Federals throughout the day. Explore the fortifications in its most solemn hour as the Confederates attempt to hold off the advancing armies. $5 for Youth (6-17) $8 for Adults (18+). 912-727-2339.
