New Cottages Open at Gordonia-Alatamaha State Park

Three beautiful new cottages have just opened at Gordonia-Alatamaha State Park in southeast Georgia. Each features a screened porch with park view, fully equipped kitchen, two bedrooms and two baths. Visitors will enjoy the park’s 18-hole golf course, 12-acre lake, standup-paddleboard and aquacycle rental, large group shelter, nature trail and more. The cottages rent for $185 per night with no cleaning fee. Make reservations by calling 800-864-7275 or at GeorgiaStateParks.org.

Sam Train

SAM Shortline Train

All aboard! Relax in vintage rail cars during this train tour of southern Georgia. The SAM Shortline goes through Georgia Veterans State Park, crosses sparkling Lake Blackshear and stops in quaint towns along the way. Explore President Jimmy Carter’s boyhood farm, downtown Plains and Americus, a telephone museum and more. Stay overnight at Lake Blackshear Resort and Golf Club, right inside the park. Tails on Trails

You and your four-legged friend can earn a t-shirt and matching bandana through our new Tails on Trails quest. All you have to do is get your $15 membership card punched at participating park offices after exploring dog-friendly trails. Tails on Trails includes Fort Mountain (Chatsworth), F.D. Roosevelt (Pine Mountain), Don Carter (Lake Lanier), Sweetwater Creek (Lithia Springs), High Falls (Jackson), Fort McAllister (Richmond Hill) and Red Top Mountain (Lake Allatoona) state parks. Grab that leash and watch your pup’s tail wag!

Site-Specific Reservations

Now you’ll be able to request your favorite campsite number and be sure it’s still available when you arrive at four state parks. The entire campground at James H. Floyd (Summerville) and Richard B. Russell (Elberton) are now site-specific, while select sections of Reed Bingham (Adel) and Laura S. Walker (Waycross) are site-specific. All Georgia State Park campgrounds welcome tents, trailers, RVs -- and even the family dog.

Harvest Time at the Homestead

September 17 & 18, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Step back in time to the 1800s and experience the lives of citizens and soldiers. Living-history enthusiasts will bring our log cabin to life as they demonstrate crafts and daily activities. Try your hand at woodworking, laundry, soap making and more. Stop by the Civil War camp and visit with soldiers, plus watch black powder weapons being fired. $5 parking. 770-975-0055
