 Chatham County Celebrates Parks and Recreation Month
It’s National Parks & Recreation Month! The annual initiative led by the National Recreation and Park Association celebrates the essential role parks and recreation play in building stronger, healthier communities. The 2026 theme, "The Power Of," highlights the many ways parks, programs, and the people behind them positively impact the lives of Chatham County residents.
Throughout the month, Chatham County celebrated The Power of People, The Power of Play, The Power of History, and The Power of Community by showcasing the Parks & Recreation employees, facilities, programs, and historic spaces that serve residents every day.
While National Parks and Recreation Month may only last through July, the work of Chatham County Parks & Recreation continues year-round. Thank you to the dedicated members of Team Chatham who keep our parks beautiful and our programs going year-round!

Originally built as a training facility for Olympic weightlifters before the 1996 Atlanta Games, the Anderson Cohen Weightlifting Center (ACWC) welcomed competitors back to its historic platforms earlier this month.
Held July 9–12, the inaugural USA Masters Elite Masters Invitational Tournament brought 200 of the nation's top male and female weightlifters to the Anderson Cohen Weightlifting Center for four days of competition, with athletes facing off in multiple daily sessions within their age groups.

Located at 1850 E. Montgomery Crossroads, Lake Mayer Community Park is one of the oldest parks in the Chatham County Parks & Recreation system. The 75-acre park opened in 1972 and continues to serve as a major community hub for recreation.
Located just inside the park's gates, the Lake Mayer Community Center offers something for everyone. Visitors can enjoy Bingo, wellness and fitness classes, arts and enrichment programs, workshops, community resources, and rental spaces for meetings and special events.
Other park amenaties include a 35-acre lake, 1.5 mile paved walking and jogging path, picnic pavilions, restrooms, playground, and facilities for baseball, basketball, pickleball, tennis, and skating.
The park also serves as a trailhead for the Truman Linear Park Trail, which extends from the park north to DeRenne Avenue.

The Chatham County Aquatic Center will offer water polo pick-up games on Saturdays, August 1-29th.

Anderson Cohen Weightlifting Center is now offering $10 monthly memberships to active Savannah State University Student Athletes.
Must present a valid Savannah State University ID, and their status will be confirmed using the current active student-athlete roster.

Since 1998, the Frank G. Murray Community Center has been a hub for wellness, creativity, and connection in Chatham County. Named in honor of former Commissioner Frank G. Murray, the center continues his legacy of community service through dynamic, inclusive programs for all ages.

Chatham County Parks & Recreation is thrilled to expand our reach into the Greenbriar Community, a place filled with promise, heart, and hope that has been transformed into a vibrant recreational hub for youth and seniors alike.
Greenbriar is centrally located within a half-mile of Alfred E. Beach High School, DeRenne Middle School, Hodge Elementary School, and Building Bridges (an alternative middle school), making it perfectly positioned to meet the needs of the surrounding communities.
