 Chatham County Crews Support South Georgia Wildfire Response
As wildfires burned thousands of acres in South Georgia last month, emergency crews from across the state stepped in to help. Among them, officials from Chatham Emergency Management Agency and the Chatham County Fire Department.
The Chatham County response team spent more than a week on the ground coordinating resources, supporting communications, and helping Brantley County officials manage both the immediate response and the longer-term recovery efforts.

Whether you’re cleaning out the house or tidying up the yard, here’s a quick guide to help make pickup day easy.
Bulk Waste
Need to get rid of large items or old appliances? That’s considered bulk waste, and our Public Works crews can help with pickup. Place items curbside no more than three days before your scheduled collection day, and make sure everything is out before 7 a.m. on pickup day.
Yard Waste
Have yard debris to toss out? Keep yard waste separate from bulk items and place it curbside before 7 a.m. on collection day. Use reusable containers or compostable bags only — no plastic bags or plastic mixed in. Bags must weigh less than 50 pounds, with a limit of 15 bags per pickup. Loose branches and tree waste are accepted, but palm fronds should be placed with bulk items instead.

Next month, Girl Scouts from across the region will have the opportunity to train alongside experts from Chatham Emergency Management Agency and other local first responders to learn how to operate emergency radios, process evidence, triage injuries, and even fly drones.
It’s all part of Camp Operation: REACT, a collaboration between Chatham County, the Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia, and Memorial Health to give Girl Scouts in seventh through ninth grade a hands-on look at what it means to lead during a crisis.
Scheduled for June 1 - 5 at Camp Low in Savannah, the camp will also serve as a kick-off to the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season, which begins June 1. Recently, CEMA and GSHG leaders joined The Chat Podcast for a special three-part series to discuss the unique opportunity the camp provides.

The Chatham County Resilience Roadmap project is a community-driven initiative designed to strengthen how we prepare for, respond to, and recover from challenges—both everyday stresses and major disruptions.
The project will build on work already underway, uncover gaps, and identify priority initiatives to make Chatham County safer, stronger, and more equitable for everyone.
