Soul in the City
"Last night was a monumental moment for the Historic Northwest District. The community came together to celebrate the reopening of the historic Sunset Lounge — a place that first opened in 1926, becoming a cultural anchor, a gathering space, and a stage that helped shape the artistic identity of West Palm Beach. Legends like Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, and Louis Armstrong performed here, leaving behind a legacy that forever influenced the musical fabric of our City.
We marked the start of this new era at the Sunset Lounge with an incredible performance by Grammy-nominated saxophonist Boney James during Soul in the City.
Thank you to our City Commissioners and CRA Board, our City Administration, the CRA, City staff, and every partner and advocate who believed in this project.
With this investment, the Sunset Lounge will once again serve as a home for live music, community gatherings, cultural storytelling, and a place where residents and visitors alike can experience the heritage of this neighborhood."

Sour Seed Bagels Ribbon Cutting
"It was great to celebrate the grand opening of Sour Seed Bagels — and the opening of the newest parklet — right here in Downtown West Palm Beach. Congratulations to Chris Slawson and the entire team on this exciting milestone!
West Palm Beach is proud to be home to entrepreneurs who bring creativity, craftsmanship, and community spirit to everything they do. Chris launched Sour Seed Bagels in 2022 as a pop-up in Miami, and people fell in love fast — and for good reason. His handcrafted sourdough bagels are made from scratch using organic ingredients and traditional artisan techniques. The quality speaks for itself — you can truly taste the care and passion in every bite.
We’re also celebrating the newest parklet, made possible through the West Palm Beach Downtown Development Authority’s Parklet Grant Program, which provides funding to downtown businesses within the DDA District boundaries to upgrade or install parklets. Programs like this support local businesses and enhance the overall experience for residents, visitors, and customers.
The City and the DDA are proud to support small businesses like this that help West Palm Beach continue to thrive."

2025 WPB Fire Department “Heroes Among Us” Awards Ceremony
"Last week, we celebrated the brave men and women of the West Palm Beach Fire Department — our local heroes who run toward emergencies when everyone else is running away.
Whether you are responding to a fire, a medical emergency, a rescue, or working behind the scenes in prevention, training, inspection, or support roles — you are the ones protecting our community.
Last year alone, our Fire Department responded to more than 31,000 calls for service. Thirty-one thousand moments when someone in this City needed help — and you showed up. That level of dedication doesn’t happen by accident. It comes from a deep commitment to service and to each other.
On behalf of our residents and the City Commission, thank you for your service and your courage — and congratulations to all of our award recipients.
To Chief Matty and the entire command staff: thank you for leading this department with excellence and purpose. And thank you for supporting the firefighters who make this department truly outstanding." — Mayor Keith A. James
