Post Storm Permitting Hours Update

The City of Treasure Island is updating the permitting process for storm recovery after Friday’s (Nov. 1, 2024) Special City Commission Meeting.

YOU CAN APPLY FOR AND OBTAIN A PERMIT before having a substantial damage determination completed for your property. Please be aware that you must sign a hold harmless document AS PART OF THIS PROCESS. Access this document on the website by going to the Applications and Forms webpage under the Community Development Department and clicking “FEMA 50% Compliance Affidavit."

This hold harmless document acknowledges the risk of moving forward with any work before completing a substantial damage determination.  If a structure is determined to be substantially damaged, and a re-assessment still determines the structure substantially damaged, then the structure would need to come into compliance with the Florida Building Code and the City of Treasure Island’s Building and Floodplain management regulations. This means that funds spent on a structure could still require elevation of the residence to the Base Flood Elevation plus 2 (two) feet at a minimum, demolishing the structure, or floodproofing a non-residential structure.

If you have already applied for a permit and wish to have your permit issued with the affidavit, please email your notarized affidavit to permits@mytreasureisland.org with your permit number or your address.  We also have notary services available at the city during our permitting hours if you would prefer to come in.

All permit applications will go through our normal permitting review process, which means they will be thoroughly reviewed before permits are issued. We ask that you understand that the same staff members who handle the intake of permit applications are also responsible for permit processing and sending out their approvals, so we request your continued patience as we work through more than 624 applications. The applications that can be permitted quickly (interior demolition, electrical and HVAC repairs, etc.) are being processed, and all applications other than whole house demolition and emergency permits are reviewed in the order received.

For a more efficient experience, we strongly encourage you to create an Online Permitting (OPPS) account at MyTreasureIsland.com/OPPS. This account will allow you to track your permit’s progress ONLINE from start to finish, saving you time and money.

To streamline our permitting process, the Permitting Office will be open for in-person assistance only on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. This change allows staff to focus on processing permits on other days: Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

Why the Change?
Recent storms caused server downtime, delaying permit processing. Since access was restored, our Community Development team has been diligently handling the 640 permit applications received. Currently, 71 permits are under review, and 53 have been issued. Each permit review requires at least 30 minutes. Additional staff have been brought in and are currently in training to assist.

The Permitting Process

Use the OPPS for the fastest service. For applicants unable to access the online system, contact permits@mytreasureisland.org.

  3. Completeness Review
  • Complete applications receive a confirmation. When notified of completion, see the Approval Notification step.
  • Incomplete applications won’t be processed; an email will outline what’s missing.
