As we continue to recover from the impacts of Hurricanes Helene and Milton, we understand that many of you are eager to begin the rebuilding process. Nearly every structure on the island sustained some form of damage, and we want to assure you that the City of Treasure Island is here to help. However, we kindly ask for your patience as we work through this recovery together.
Permit Fee Waivers: The city has waived permit fees for the following types of work related to hurricane damage:
- Interior demolition of flood-damaged drywall, flooring, baseboards, and cabinets.
- Fence installation.
- Tree removal.
- Roof repair/replacement.
- Electrical repairs (e.g., meter bases, power surges affecting appliances).
You do not need a permit to begin removing damaged items from your home. However, please notify the city and apply for a permit within 48 hours of starting the work. You can do this by emailing permits@mytreasureisland.org with photos of the damage and your property address, which will serve as your notification.
Expedited Permits: Some permits will be expedited, provided the necessary documentation is complete:
- A permit is required to replace drywall, insulation, and cabinets. These permits are typically processed within 24 hours of application.
- Baseboards and flooring do not require a permit for replacement.
- Window replacements require a permit, but these are issued "over the counter," meaning they will be prepared for issuance as soon as they are processed.
- Roofs with 25% or less damaged surface do not require a permit for repairs.
- Roofs with more than 25% damage require a permit. However, emergency repairs can be made without a permit if you notify the city.
Exterior Damages:
-
Fallen fence panels only (no posts) can be replaced without a permit. If posts need to be replaced, a permit is required.
- Fallen trees can be removed without a permit, but please take photos before removal for documentation.

Important NFIP Information: If your building is in a Special Flood Hazard Area (floodplain), please be aware of the term "substantial damage." This applies to structures where the total cost of repairs equals or exceeds 50% of the building’s pre-disaster market value.

We appreciate your cooperation as we continue the recovery process. The city is here to assist you in rebuilding stronger and safer.
