Treasure Island, Florida
Hurricane Helene Update

Treasure Island Police Department and the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office are closing down access to all barrier islands at 6 p.m. This includes Treasure Island. Access will open once the islands are deemed safe by officials.

Helene is a category 3 storm and continues to strengthen. Winds are already gusting more than 60 mph. Expect conditions to continue to get worse through the evening. The storm surge is rising, and roads are flooding. If you chose not to evacuate, make a plan to stay safe inside your home. As conditions continue to worsen 911 responses may no longer be safe for responders.

If water begins to flood your home:

  • Turn off all electrical systems in your home if you can. Don't walk through water to get to the fuse box.
  • Move to an elevated/stable area of your home.
  • Turn the water off.

Do not drive through flooded roadways:

  • Don't drive through flooded streets - you may push water into neighbors’ properties or risk your car getting stuck.
  • The road may have collapsed under that water.
  • It takes just 12 inches of rushing water to carry away most cars and just 2 feet of rushing water can carry away SUVs and trucks.
  • It is NEVER safe to drive or walk into flood waters.

Do not wade in flood waters:

  • It only takes 6 inches of moving water to knock you off your feet.
  • Water may be deeper than it appears and can hide hazards such as sharp objects, washed[1]out road surfaces, electrical wires, chemicals, etc.
  • Flood waters could be contaminated.
