Hello Everyone,
A community celebration is in the works to recognize the Newtown Historic District being listed in the National Register of Historic Places! A Taste of Newtown will be a free, family-friendly event focused on honoring Newtown’s past, celebrating its present and looking forward to the future.
The festivities will take place at the Robert L. Taylor Community Complex, 1845 John Rivers St., on Saturday, Nov. 8 from noon to 5 p.m. and will feature live music, food, performances, vendors and trolley tours sharing the rich history and culture of Newtown.
Led by the City’s former Historic Preservationist, the late Dr. Clifford Smith, the City of Sarasota began pursuing a national historic designation for Newtown in 2009 when community members expressed a strong interest in preserving the unique history of Newtown.
Following an extensive process to meet federal requirements, the Newtown Historic District was placed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2024. With over 700 contributing resources, the Newtown Historic District is the single largest historic district in Sarasota and the largest Black historic district in Florida, based on the number of contributing historic resources.
After enduring last year’s unprecedented hurricane season and mourning the unexpected passing of Dr. Smith, the community is now ready to celebrate the notable distinction of being listed on the National Register of Historic Places. We hope you’ll join the community celebration on Nov. 8.
The event is hosted by the Newtown Community Redevelopment Agency and Newtown Business Council in partnership with the City of Sarasota.
Additional details about A Taste of Newtown, including applications to be a food vendor, business vendor, or performing partner, are available at www.NewtownCRA.org/TasteofNewtown with a chance to win a raffle prize for those who RSVP.
Mark your calendars -- you won’t want to miss this celebration!
Have a great weekend!
 Liz Alpert Mayor

City residents are invited to attend one of three upcoming open house events to discuss plans to update the Transportation Chapter of the Sarasota City Plan.
Each event will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. with a different location each evening:
-
Tuesday, Oct. 21: The Learning Center at Harvest Sarasota, 3650 17th Street, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
-
Wednesday, Oct. 22: Robert L. Taylor Community Complex, 1845 John Rivers St., from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
-
Thursday, Oct. 23: St. Armands Key Lutheran Church, 40 N Adams Dr., from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Attendees will have an opportunity to visit information stations, talk with engineering staff, and share feedback regarding an update to the Transportation Chapter of the Sarasota City Plan. Residents are welcome to stop by at any time during each event. The same materials will be presented at all three open houses.
Updating the Transportation Chapter of the Sarasota City Plan will translate Sarasota in Motion, the citywide transportation master plan adopted in 2020, into formal policy. In addition to expanding transportation options, this update to the Transportation Chapter focuses on reducing traffic congestion, encouraging smarter use of our roadways and strengthening business districts through enhanced access.
This update provides an opportunity for community-driven change through public input with the goal of creating a more connected Sarasota where transportation is safer, easier, and works for everyone.

Fences and barriers will begin appearing along the trails at The Nature Park at Bobby Jones Golf Club in the coming week. These will be the first signs of a multi-phase enhancement project, bringing exciting improvements to the park’s natural landscape and visitor experience.
Phase I will include planting over 200 native trees including oaks, maples, pines, magnolias and palms, plus landscaping will be enhanced with about 15,000 native shrubs and grasses installed. Also, a new pedestrian gate and access path near 8th Street will be added for residents on the eastern side of the park.
Future upgrades will feature:
- Wetland pavilion
- Shaded rookery/observation node
- Marsh overlook
- Scenic boardwalk
- Driving range observation node
- Micro forests and additional trail enhancements
These additions will offer new ways to explore and enjoy Sarasota’s natural environment. Whether you're a nature lover, birdwatcher, or simply looking for a peaceful walk or jog, now is a great time to visit The Nature Park and watch the transformation take shape.
We’re proud to invest in green spaces that help make our community vibrant and connected to nature.

In partnership with The Bay, the City is excited to announce the return of Shred Stock, a free, drive-up document shredding event in the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall parking lot on Saturday, Nov. 8, from 9 a.m. until noon.
City of Sarasota residents will have the opportunity to securely destroy up to four boxes of documents, including papers and file folders with or without staples and paper clips. During this drive-up event, materials should be placed in your vehicle trunk to be removed and destroyed on-site by Records and Information Management Division staff, free of charge. Empty boxes will be returned to residents’ vehicles.
Local band The Garbage Men will perform 60’s hits on their iconic home-built instruments. You won’t want to miss it!
During the first annual Shred Stock event in March 2025, over 180 residents came by to have sensitive documents quickly and securely disposed of while enjoying live music. If you couldn’t attend the inaugural event, we hope you’ll join us on Nov. 8!
Shred Stock is available for City of Sarasota residents only. Participants may be asked to show proof of residency upon arrival.

Do you or someone you know have old or unused medications taking up space in a medicine cabinet? Here’s your chance to safely get rid of them.
On Saturday, Oct. 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Sarasota Police Department is partnering with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) for the 29th National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.
This event gives you a safe, anonymous way to dispose of unneeded medications, including pills, capsules, patches and other solid prescription drugs. For 16 years, Take Back Day has helped prevent prescription drug misuse and accidental poisonings by keeping medications out of the wrong hands and away from our waterways.
You can drop off items at two Sarasota locations:
-
Sarasota Police Department, 2099 Adams Lane
-
Caring Collective, 1750 17th St.
Thanks to events like this, law enforcement and the DEA have collected more than 19.8 million pounds of medications nationwide. That’s nearly 10,000 tons safely removed from homes.
A few reminders before you stop by: collection sites cannot accept syringes, sharps or illegal drugs. Liquids such as cough syrup must remain in their original containers with the caps tightly sealed.
If you can’t make it to one of these locations, you can find other nearby drop-off sites at DEATakeBack.com.
The Sarasota Police Department also has a secure drug disposal box available for public use. The program allows residents to anonymously dispose of unused, unwanted or expired prescription medications. The drug disposal box is in the lobby of SPD Headquarters, 2099 Adams Lane, and is accessible every day from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Do your part to keep Sarasota safe and clean, one medicine cabinet at a time.
