Hello Everyone,
We’re pleased to share that temporary park benches are now installed in the Nature Park at Bobby Jones Golf Club. Look for them along the shell trails winding through the park, inviting visitors to pause and enjoy the many sights and sounds within this urban oasis. Wildlife is abundant at the nature park! Alligators, rabbits, turtles and a wide variety of birds – from sandhill cranes to roseate spoonbills to pileated woodpeckers – all coexist here. The park offers the chance to safely immerse ourselves in their habitat and relax. What a truly special place!
For it to be a friendly, welcoming space, we all need to do our part and observe the posted rules when visiting. Those rules include no dogs off-leash and no fishing. When the park opened about a year and a half ago as part of the Bobby Jones Golf Club restoration, the decision was made for the nature park to be dog-friendly; however, Fido must be leashed at all times. Off-leash dogs, no matter how friendly and obedient, can induce undue stress on wildlife and humans alike. We appreciate everyone being responsible and following these posted rules so everyone can enjoy the park.
As planned, the Parks and Recreation Department is moving forward with improvements to the nature park. We requested $1.5 million in park impact fees, collected and dispersed by Sarasota County, which will go toward the construction design phase for the entire park. We plan to install irrigation, trees, landscaping and permanent park benches by early 2026. Then staff will focus on hardscape construction. Using $1.67 million in park impact fees, also requested from the County, a boardwalk, marsh overlook, pavilion, seating areas and a pedestrian entrance off 8th Street will be constructed.
While the Parks and Rec Department remains busy with hurricane recovery, we appreciate staff continuing to shepherd this important project.
The City Commission will be on summer break in June and City News will be on hiatus as well.
Hope to see you around Sarasota!
 Liz Alpert Mayor

City administrative offices will be closed Monday, May 26, in observance of Memorial Day. Garbage, recycling and yard waste collection schedules will not be affected by the holiday.
The Bay Runner will operate regular hours, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., with a modified route to accommodate the annual parade on Main Street.
While administrative offices will be closed, many City facilities will remain open with adjusted hours:
Reminder: The City will host the annual Memorial Day parade in conjunction with the Sarasota Patriotic Observance Committee. The parade begins at 10 a.m. at the intersection of Main Street and Osprey Avenue and will conclude at 11 a.m. at Chaplain J.D. Hamel Park with a ceremony honoring our nation’s fallen soldiers.
The eye-catching aqua blue lighting scheme on the Ringling Bridge has returned!
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), which controls the decorative lighting on the bridge, recently announced the return of the all-blue lights during evening/overnight hours. The lights will default to red, white and blue on holidays observed by the State of Florida.
We appreciate FDOT granting this request for our community and returning to the serene aqua blue palette, which had been in place when the decorative light display started almost four years ago.
Please note: The City of Sarasota does not have jurisdiction over the Ringling Bridge lighting. As such, the City Commission is not able to accept or consider individual lighting requests.

Heads up! All three of the City’s parking garages – Palm Avenue, State Street, St. Armands – will go gateless beginning Tuesday, June 17!
This change was made with two goals in mind: improve traffic flow in some of the city’s busiest areas and make parking easier through modern technology.
Here’s what you need to know:
-
On June 17, the entrance and exit gates in the City’s three parking garages will temporarily be in an upright position until they are removed.
-
Each car will need to pay within 15 minutes of entering the garage through a physical pay station, mobile app (Passport, ParkMobile) or text-to-pay.
- Parking rates will remain the same: First hour is free, second hour is $2, third hour and beyond is $1 per hour. Event parking is a flat $5 fee with credit cards and coins (no dollar bills) accepted
-
Reminder: Parking is free in City garages on Sundays and City observed holidays.
|
Also, garage parking enforcement hours will be extended from 7:30 a.m. until each garage closes. Hours of operation for each garage are:
-
Palm Avenue and State Street:
-
Monday – Thursday, 7 a.m. to midnight
-
Friday – Saturday, 7 a.m. to 2 a.m.
-
St. Armands:
- Monday – Thursday, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
-
Friday – Saturday, 8 a.m. to midnight
More information will be shared in the weeks leading to the launch on June 17. In the meantime, reach out to the Parking Department with any questions by e-mailing ParkingInfo@sarasotafl.gov.
With hurricane season just over two weeks away, starting on June 1, residents are encouraged to prepare their property for tropical weather.
While steps like securing loose items and ensuring gutters and drainage systems are clear are important, don’t forget to add tree preparation to the list.
In the event of severe weather, untrimmed trees can pose a serious hazard and cause damage to homes and vehicles, as well as potentially block roadways.
Once a tree has been trimmed, branches should be properly prepared as vegetative waste, collected via special pickup for an additional fee, or taken by the resident to the Sarasota County landfill.
Special pickup can be arranged by contacting the Solid Waste Division at 941-263-6170.
When faced with potential storm impacts, every bit of preparation counts. Click here for more information on hurricane preparedness.

Just in time for hurricane season, we’ve added another way to communicate with residents: Neighbors by Ring.
Neighbors is a social networking platform affiliated with Ring doorbells and security cameras. It’s a standalone mobile app and available to anyone -- whether or not you’re a Ring customer.
The City’s Communications Office plans to use Neighbors as a supplemental outreach tool to connect with more residents, particularly during an emergency situation. The Communications team recently worked with Ring to create a verified account, which was launched last week during Hurricane Preparedness Week.
Neighbors is available within the Ring app. It also can be downloaded at no cost via the Apple Store or Google Play.

Soon there will be a new public art piece in the Rosemary District!
Local artist Kaitlin Ramirez (also known as Swirly Painter) is hard at work on a mural featuring Lewis and Irene Colson, pioneers of the historic Overtown neighborhood, on a wall outside Sarasota School of Arts + Sciences.
After being approved by the Public Art Committee in March of this year, the artist began work on the larger-than-life piece in early May and continues to make significant progress.
The piece was commissioned as part of the Public Art Program’s Call for Walls initiative. This endeavor was started to showcase the spirit of Sarasota and its diverse community through high-quality, themed murals throughout the City. Projects are selected through a dedicated process that ensures each piece aligns with City values and enhances the City’s cultural landscape.
The mural is scheduled to be completed in June with a public dedication ceremony being planned for later this summer.
You can learn more about the Public Art Program here.

The Fleet Services division of the Public Works Department recently received a notable recognition – the Blue Seal of Excellence – from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE).
Fleet Services is responsible for maintenance on 850 City-operated vehicles, including 83 trailers, 33 garbage trucks, and 15 utility trucks. It's through their hard work and commitment that many of the City’s essential services, including trash pickup, can continue to run as efficiently as possible.
The Fleet Services team ( L to R): Jese Vidal, Fleet Services Technician III (A.S.E. Certified Technician); Juan Velazquez, Fleet Services Foreperson (A.S.E. Certified Technician); Donna Payton, Fleet Services Office Assistant; Ken Lange (CPFP), Fleet Manager (A.S.E. Master Automotive /Master Truck Certified Technician); Lorenzo Guzman, Fleet Services Technician III (A.S.E. Certified Technician); Robert Veverka, Fleet Services Master Technician (A.S.E. Master Certified Technician); Nick Visaggio, Fleet Services Master Technician (A.S.E. Master Certified Technician); Roilan Vidal, Fleet Services Master Technician (A.S.E. Master Certified Technician)
The Blue Seal of Excellence is bestowed upon service teams that have at least 75% of their technicians ASE certified, which means that at least one certified technician covers each repair or service discipline offered. Of the six technicians employed by the City, four are ASE Master Certified.
This is a significant professional honor for the team. There are only three ASE certified shops within a 3-mile radius of our region, including the City’s.
We’re proud to have such a dedicated group committed to pursuing excellence in their craft serving our community. Congratulations on this accomplishment!
Kudos are in order for Communications Assistant Luke Mocherman!
Luke is the recipient of the Florida Municipal Communicators Association’s 2025 Rising Star Award. The honor recognizes an individual with less than five years’ experience in government communications who has shown achievement, excellence and potential for future leadership in the field.
The nomination, submitted by the City’s Communications General Manager, shined a light on Luke’s strong interest in local government, professionalism and commitment to sharing information with our community.
A Sarasota native, Luke’s dedication was tested during our unprecedented 2024 hurricane season. With less than six months’ municipal government communications under his belt, and even less emergency communications experience, he was steady and focused as we faced three hurricanes in 65 days with major storms Helene and Milton hitting us back-to-back within 13 days. During that challenging time, Luke did more than he was asked, working tirelessly with the Communications team to create graphics, update webpages and social media feeds to provide the most current information as quickly as possible for our community.
One year into his tenure with the City, Luke can attest that no two days are alike with municipal communications – from sharing information about tree giveaways to public parking to development applications to City Commission proclamations. This past spring, he spearheaded the successful public outreach campaign for the inaugural Shred Stock.
Congratulations, Luke, on being recognized by fellow Florida government communicators as a rising star!
