You’re invited to participate in a community conversation with the creative minds behind the new Sarasota performing arts center!
During two “Ask Our Architects” sessions, members with our world renowned design architect, Renzo Piano Building Workshop, and architect of record, Sarasota’s own Sweet Sparkman Architects, will engage with the community and listen to feedback and insights.
Each conversation will be held at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall Grand Foyer on Tuesday, July 16: Noon – 1 p.m. and 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.
RSVP here via Eventbrite. Questions can be submitted in advance by emailing info@performingartsfoundation.org
If you're unable to be there in person, you can join the conversation virtually. Both sessions will be livestreamed on the Sarasota Performing Arts Foundation and City of Sarasota Facebook pages.
Thanks to our partners with the Sarasota Performing Arts Foundation for their commitment to community outreach and coordinating the opportunity for residents to engage with the architects as we work together to create a signature cultural arts space for Sarasota.
Myrtle Street between Central Avenue and N. Orange Avenue will be temporarily closed from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. the week of July 15 to accommodate a Florida Power & Light power pole replacement.
Please follow the detour signs.
Information about road closures can be found on the City of Sarasota website.

We’re asking small business owners in Sarasota who were impacted last month by the excessive rainfall and flooding associated with Invest 90L to provide economic impact information as we pursue the possibility of federal assistance. Staff are trying to gather enough documentation to provide to the Florida Division of Emergency Management so the state can request a Small Business Administration declaration for our community.
If minimum economic impact thresholds are met, SBA Economic Injury Disaster Loans could become available. The loans provide capital for a business to survive until regular operations resume.
Business owners are encouraged to complete this economic impact form and return it to Richard.Kerkering@sarasotafl.gov by Thursday, August 1, 2024.
Without all business owners who suffered economic damages completing the form, the likelihood of a Small Business Administration declaration for our community will diminish.

We’re thrilled to recognize Officers Nelson and Bearden, alongside their dedicated four-legged partners K9 Brody and K9 Bruin, for their recent accomplishment in Explosive Ordnance Detection (EOD) training. Teaming up with Cory McDonnell from Grassroots K9 Sarasota, they trained over 120 hours with their K9 companions to detect explosive odors.
The training culminated in a rigorous exam by evaluators from the U.S. Police Canine Association (USPCA). The teams were tested on various scenarios to ensure they had the highest EOD skills. We proudly report that both teams excelled in their evaluations, showcasing their unwavering dedication and proficiency.

Dogs have an incredible sense of smell, with up to 300 million olfactory receptors in their noses, compared to about six million in humans. Also, the part of a dog's brain devoted to analyzing smells is about 40 times greater than ours. Most canines enjoy a “job” that keeps their bodies busy and their brains occupied – one reason they make terrific explosive detection dogs.
K9 Brody and K9 Bruin now possess the skill set to inspect suspicious packages, clear parade routes and secure other special events at larger venues. With their newfound expertise, our K9 officers are ready to return to patrolling our city with enhanced capabilities.
Congratulations to Officer Nelson, Officer Bearden, K9 Brody and K9 Bruin for their outstanding achievement! Their hard work and determination truly exemplify the spirit of service and protection. We're honored to have such exceptional individuals safeguarding the City of Sarasota.
The Robert L. Taylor Community Complex will host "K.O.P.S. Summer Fun Night" later this month in partnership with the Sarasota Police Department.
K.O.P.S., an acronym for "Kids and Officers Promoting Solidarity," is a collaborative initiative that fosters mutual respect and understanding between local children and law enforcement officers.
On Friday, July 26, kids ages 8 to 15 can be dropped off at R.L.Taylor for a special event featuring games, sports and interaction with our local officers in a friendly and supportive environment.
From 5 to 7 p.m., kids ages 8 to 11 will engage in age-appropriate activities and spend time in the swimming pool. For the older group, ages 12 to 15, the event will continue from 7 to 9 p.m., offering an evening of sports, games and camaraderie. Dinner, refreshments, supervision and all activities will be free to attendees.

When public parking changes go into effect Monday, July 15, ambassadors with our Parking Division will be on site at parking areas to explain the new policies and help with the transition, which will include giving warnings only, no citations.
The new policies will affect use of EV charging stations; pay stations; parking at the Centennial Park Boat Ramp; parking at the Palm Avenue, State Street and St. Armands garages; and on-street parking along portions of Benjamin Franklin Drive. Details are available here.
The Parking Division recommended the changes, which reflect industry best practices to boost turnover of premium parking spaces, following an 8-month period of community engagement and outreach.
Please send comments and questions about the changes to ParkingInfo@Sarasotafl.gov
