The federal Presidents Day holiday will be observed Monday, Feb. 20 which means City administrative offices will be closed and the regular City Commission meeting will be deferred to Tuesday, Feb. 21. Residential trash, recycling and yard waste will be collected as usual.
While City parks will be open, hours of operation at recreation facilities will vary by location:
Those interested in purchasing tickets in-person to one of the many upcoming shows at the Van Wezel Preforming Arts Hall may do so at the Box Office, 777 N. Tamiami Trail, which will have regular business hours from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Accreditation has long been considered the optimum way to maintain the highest standards of professional excellence. For public safety agencies, accreditation is beneficial for the organization, officers and community.
The Sarasota Police Department will embark on renewing its accreditation status next month and the public is invited to offer comments to the assessors. A team from the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation (CFA) is scheduled to arrive March 21 to examine all aspects of the SPD’s policies and procedures, management, operations, and support services.
To receive accredited status, SPD must comply and live by the spirit of established standards, many of which are critical to life, health and safety. Assessors will review written materials, interview individuals, and visit offices and other places where compliance can be observed.
A standards manual is available for public review online at www.FLAccreditation.org under the ‘Standards’ tab.
For more information regarding CFA or for citizens wishing to offer written comments about SPD’s ability to meet the standards of accreditation, send correspondence to: CFA, P.O. Box 1489, Tallahassee, Florida 32302, or email to flaccreditation@fdle.state.fl.us
Once the assessors complete a review of the agency, they’ll report back to the full CFA, which will determine if SPD will receive accredited status. SPD’s accreditation is valid for three years.

To make it easier for visitors and residents to discover and support the more than 130 shops, restaurants and businesses on St. Armands Circle, the St. Armands Business Improvement District has launched a new online merchant directory and map.
Businesses can be searched by category such as fashion & shopping, restaurants, real estate, sweet treats and special services. The map can easily be used on mobile devices as visitors stroll the Circle.
Opened in 1926 thanks visionary John Ringing, St. Armands Circle is one of our treasured locations and a destination for visitors worldwide. We anticipate these new materials will make a day or evening at St. Armands even easier, more accessible and enjoyable for all heading to the Circle.

Mark your calendar for Wednesday, March 1 to join us for the second Attainable Housing Town Hall from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at City Hall.
This is a continuation of the community discussion in January, when City staff provided an overview of how attainable housing could be incorporated into future developments within the downtown. During the upcoming Town Hall, staff will share strategies on how the much-needed attainable housing inventory can be boosted.
An overview of proposed incentives to encourage attainable housing will be presented, including the opportunity for increased density up to four times the base density in exchange for attainable housing on-site in the downtown. It’s important to note this discussion is limited to the downtown and four zone districts: Downtown Bayfront (DTB), Downtown Core (DTC), Downtown Edge (DTE) and Downtown Neighborhood Edge (DTNE).
There will be an opportunity for public input during the Town Hall and frequently asked questions will be addressed.
The meeting will be livestreamed on www.SarasotaFL.gov and will be available on demand. The first Attainable Housing Town Hall is posted on the Meetings/Agendas/Videos webpage under ‘Public Forums & Community Meetings of Interest’.
We commend our environmentally-conscious residents for taking the few extra steps to recycle!
Since converting to single stream recycling almost four years ago, with all recyclables placed in one single cart, 90% of residents participate. Impressive!
We’re asking residents to be mindful of what is placed in their recycling cart each week. Remember: the recycling cart is not an additional garbage cart. Recyclables only, please.
Accepted items include: rinsed bottles, jars, cans, newspapers, magazines, paper bags and cardboard.
Plastic bags, pizza cartons, clothes hangers, yard waste and household garbage are not recyclable and should not be placed in the recycling cart. Wondering if an item can be recycled? Use our Cart Smart online tool to find out quickly and easily.
By properly recycling, you're doing your part to reduce the amount of waste going into the landfill. Thank you for being good stewards of our precious environment.
