Shade Avenue is the number four priority on our citywide transportation master plan, Sarasota in Motion, and plans are in the works to transform it into a user-friendly ‘complete street’ from Hibiscus to 15th Street. Through design, a complete street promotes safe, age-friendly travel for driving, walking, bicycling, and riding transit. It provides a sense of place within a community and may include features such as enhanced sidewalks, landscape, trees, street lighting and public art to name a few.
By completing an online survey, citizens can provide insight into preferences and concerns about Shade Avenue. Questions include: How often do you travel along Shade Avenue? What are your biggest safety concerns? What do you consider barriers when biking/walking along the corridor? You also have the opportunity to share your opinion on different treatments for Shade Avenue such as lane markings, crosswalks, islands, bulb outs, bicycle lanes and more.
The survey takes about 5-10 minutes to complete and is open until 5 p.m. on Aug. 31. We look forward to your input to help shape the future of this well-traveled north-south avenue. Take the survey here or click the button below.
Thanks to a collaboration between Sarasota Military Academy, Sarasota Bay Estuary Program and our Parks and Recreation team, monofilament recycling containers are now installed at three popular fishing locations: Whitaker Gateway Park, Ken Thompson Park and Tony Saprito Pier.
SMA students made five recycling tubes where anglers can easily dispose of used fishing line and prevent entanglement injuries to shorebirds and sea life. SBEP facilitated the donation to the City and our Parks and Rec team installed the containers.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission encourages monofilament recycling and is educating the public about the dangers of discarded fishing line through its Monofilament Recovery and Recycling Program.
Thank you to SMA and SBEP for the collaboration and helping us be good environmental stewards!

Accolades for the design and construction of the St. Armands Garage continue to accrue with the very latest coming from the Florida American Institute of Architects. A jury of peers in Barcelona, Spain honored the project with a Citation Award of Excellence, Sustainability.
Opened to the public in February 2019, the garage offers 480 parking spaces in an attractive structure with a focus on placemaking aesthetics and sustainability. Previously, the structure became the very first municipality-operated parking garage to be recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council with a Silver Parksmart Certification. The Suncoast Branch of the American Society of Civil Engineers also honored it as Project of the Year in 2019 and the Florida Parking and Transportation Association bestowed an Award of Excellence for architecture design and structural design.
Notable features of the structure include: landscaped courtyard, five electric vehicle charging stations, ample bicycle parking with a repair station and solar panels generating energy to help power the garage. The unique, twisted stainless steel mesh material on the exterior provides wayfinding as well as placemaking for pedestrians as they stroll to and from the Circle.
Kudos to Solstice Planning and Architecture, Kimley-Horn, Jon F. Swift Construction, City staff and St. Armands residents and stakeholders who collaborated to address a parking need with a thoughtful, pleasing design while respecting St. Armands’ history.
Located at 57 N. Adams Dr., parking is free the first two hours, then $3 the first hour and $1 per hour thereafter.

It was an exciting summer for campers at Arlington Park & Aquatic Complex and Robert L. Taylor Community Complex!
Campers at RLTCC enjoyed daily visits to the facility's pool and splash pad, plus lots of time learning new sports and making friends. A big highlight was a visit from Sarasota Military Academy's lacrosse coach and team. Campers learned the four fundamental skills of lacrosse: cradling, scooping, throwing, and catching.
At Arlington Park, campers explored the park's nature trails and even tried their hand at fishing and archery. Highlights from the camp's weekly field trips included a day at Sarasota Jungle Gardens, a visit to Sky Zone, and a trip to the movies.
Arlington Park is introducing new programming for preschool and homeschool families. Each program offers fun, enriching activities with engagement opportunities for parents.

She is currently on her nationwide comedy tour, One Night With Nikki Glaser. See her at the Van Wezel on Friday, Sept. 9.
America’s premier comedian, Jerry Seinfeld, comes to Van Wezel to perform his newest stand-up routine on Friday, Sept. 30.
