Keeping Plantation High name
A proposed name change to Plantation High will not be implemented.
Last month, Plantation High's SAC proposed rebranding Plantation High, which is absorbing Plantation Middle School.
One facet of the SAC proposed makeover was to change the school name to Central Collegiate Academy. Name changes must be approved by the Broward School Board, but the majority of school board members have indicated in advance they do not want such a significant name change. That includes Adam Cervera, who spoke at the City Council meeting Wednesday, May 27.
School board representatives confirm the word “Plantation” will remain in any school name.

Project presentation delayed
A proposal to develop Plantation Marketplace will not be discussed by the Planning and Zoning Board in June. The proposal for apartments was deferred at the May 5 board meeting, as city staff requested a more thorough traffic study.
The applicant has not produced it yet, and city staff needs time to vet such things. So the earliest the Planning and Zoning Board might hear the presentation is July.
Because of public notice procedures, the item is on the June 2 agenda and is expected to be deferred immediately.
FreeBee availability expanding
The boundaries for the free ride service FreeBee will be expanding soon.
The Plantation City Council approved an agreement at its meeting May 13.
FreeBee is an on-demand, electric car transportation service that provides free, door-to-door rides via a phone app.
Ride service will grow to be between State Road 7 and Pine Island Road, with an inclusion west of Pine Island for Covenant Village and Plantation Central Park. It’s also important to note that Lauderdale West and The Pointe at Plantation (formerly Five Star Premier Residences) will now be inside the boundaries.
Members of the Lauderdale West community spoke in support of the expansion. No city money is being used at this time. Midtown funds pay for the Midtown area; a $200,000 county grant from the transportation surtax proceeds is funding the expansion.
The latest statistics show 21,794 rides in April. The expanded route could be available by mid-July.
