Broward mall update, same-day permitting, roads and more.
Broward Mall update
Background efforts continue for the new owner of the former Sears site at Broward Mall. The Miami-based Midtown Group purchased the 17-acre site in December 2024 and has been speaking with the city as it listens to partnership offers from restaurants and builders.
Although the plan is evolving, we can expect a unique mix of dining, entertainment, and residential and it's my goal to ensure that the project brings value to the City of Plantation and meets the high expectations of our residents. Our focus will also include the balance of the mall site to ensure compatibility and carve a path for the future for this centerpiece of our City.
Any plans will be presented to the City Council for approval and will include public comment opportunities. My administration has discouraged certain uses, such as drive-throughs and big-box stores and the Midtown Group has indicated it is in agreement. Plans for creating a downtown area, known as Plantation Midtown, have been on the books since 2002. This designated area between major roadways is intended for vibrant restaurant and retail activity supported by higher density residential, walkability and bike-ability.

Same-day permitting initiative
Some permit applications can be resolved quickly. To that end, our Building Safety Department is instituting “Same-Day Permitting” from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. Wednesdays for particular projects at single-family homes.
Registered contractors attempting to replace a roof, windows, doors or water heaters can submit their check-listed items, Building Safety Director Carmen Hurlbut says. Only stand-alone permits qualify.

Playground negotiations
The new playgrounds for Marcano Estates Park and North Acres Park have been chosen by the Selection Committee and our Procurement Department is now negotiating a final contract with the playground company.
The step after that is City Council approval, then installation can begin.

Plantation Park roads
The City recently completed a pavement condition study and prioritized roadways rated in poor or fair condition for rehabilitation. Plantation Park is one of the priority areas, and we are currently conducting the preliminary engineering work needed to address all pavement deficiencies efficiently and comprehensively.
As part of this effort, a geotechnical team will collect asphalt core samples and provide recommendations to ensure the roads are reconstructed for long term performance. The engineering and design phase is expected to continue through October, after which the contractor will mobilize to begin construction.
This project is funded through transportation surtax allocations dedicated to roadway improvements.

Affordable Housing plan
The Affordable Housing Advisory Committee saw two adjacent workforce residential projects that are in the pipeline: 4031 Peters Road will have 24 units with five renting at or under 120 percent Area Median Income (AMI); at 4043 Peters Road, all 15 units will be at or under 120 percent AMI.
The properties are just west of Roger’s Automotive. They will be required to stay at an affordable level for 30 years, land use attorney Rod Feiner said.
The City Council still must approve the plan, but in recent housing proposals, the Council has required every project to have an affordable component.
Women’s History Month event
A presentation, “Picturing Women,” is set for 1 p.m. Saturday, March 14, at the Plantation Historical Museum. The event is facilitated through the NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale Docent Speakers Bureau.
The speakers note: “Women have served as models, muses and mistresses to artists for centuries. Follow this illustrative history as they are captured in love, lust and daily life, on canvas, in ivory, marble, film and more.”
