Future flood management
We’ve greatly reduced the impact of rainstorm flooding in Plantation, and we’ve done it in a relatively short period of time by enhancing the maintenance and being prepared to respond to the areas that need extra attention. All this, while working on a comprehensive Stormwater Masterplan, which will help us make drainage investment decisions over the next 20 years.
City Engineer Samira Shalan and consultant Justin Gregory provided an update on this plan at the Jan. 28 City Council meeting.
More than 20,000 drainage structures and over 50 city-owned waterways were inspected over the past 3 years. Various modeling scenarios identified potential impacts of rainstorms of different intensities. This resulted in a list of improvement projects expected to cost $200 million over a 20-year period. City Engineer Shalan recommends a stormwater rate study to evaluate how to pay for upgrades.

Claw games at Broward Mall
A popular amusement endeavor is set to open in Broward Mall, after the City Council approved some requests at its Jan. 28 meeting.
Kon-Ni-Chi-Claw will offer about 35 “claw” games, where players buy a game card and use it to pay $1 or $2.50 to operate a small crane that could capture a prize. It is set to open any day in a former virtual reality ride store next to the mall’s movie theater. There are eight Kon-Ni-Chi-Claws nationwide. This one will be the first in Florida.
The request was to allow the enterprise without a supervisor on premises, a method of operation that is common at other such stores, applicant Natalia Kudelina told the Council. She said Broward Mall management approved the remote management model with conditions for cameras and security monitoring. Council approved the request, but asked for a police report of any incidents at the location after a year of operation.
Consultant to evaluate trash
The city has hired a consultant to help us evaluate what we would want in a new trash contract.
The city has a franchise agreement with WM (formerly Waste Management) that expires Sept. 30, 2028. Council members indicated the subsequent trash contract will go out for bid.
The consultant will evaluate and make a recommendation to the City Council on the most efficient and sustainable method to collect solid waste going forward, e.g. the Pay As You Throw (blue bag) system or a cart system. They will also help us with the bidding (more accurately RFSP - Request for Sealed Proposals) process.
Public input will be part of the evaluation.
Honoring Owen Duke
A celebration of life for Plantation developer Owen Duke is set for 10 a.m. Saturday at the outdoor lake overlooking The Cornerstone Corporate Park, 1270 S. Pine Island Road.
Mr. Duke, a member of the city’s Midtown Advisory Board, passed away Oct. 17. He was 86.
Mr. Duke had several stages in his life, including painting, screenwriting, serving as a commercial broker and in his community.

Amazon change of plans
You may or may not remember that the City Council approved an Amazon Fresh store at the southeast corner of Sunrise Boulevard and Flamingo Road. That space was formerly occupied by H.H. Gregg.
First came a 2023 delay after Flamingo Sunrise Investment, LLC, which owns the property at 12300 W. Sunrise Blvd., filed suit, saying Amazon hasn’t been paying its rent.
Now comes word from Amazon that it plans to sunset its Fresh and Go brick-and-mortar chains. Amazon is looking at possibilities of converting certain locations to Whole Foods market stores.
The plaza owners say nothing is in the works.
ParkFest at Heritage Park
The annual ParkFest Love and Music Day is at noon Sunday, Feb. 15, at the Broward County Heritage Park, 1100 S. Fig Tree Lane.
The 100 member Florida Youth Orchestra will again be joined by the Grammy-winning Nestor Torres on the flute. Plantation Police’s band, The Fuzz, also will play. Additionally, the event will host the Gold Coast British Car Club Annual Sports Car show and food trucks.
Admission is free but parking is $5. Bring a lawn chair or blanket.

Please use city e-mail
I really want residents to communicate with me, but I am facing a challenge.
I love helping and don’t want to miss your messages. Between personal email, texts and calls on my personal phone, Facebook Messenger, NextDoor, Instagram, LinkedIn and others, you can see how it may become challenging to keep track.
So, please contact me via my city email, Mayor@Plantation.org. I always keep a close eye on it. Using this email automatically creates a public record and allows me to most easily forward a request to appropriate city staff. (All other ways to contact me about city business are still public records, but I have to take extra steps to preserve them.)
Again, Mayor@Plantation.org. Thank you.
Monday is Presidents’ Day and City Hall offices are closed. Parks will operate on their holiday schedule.
