Projects, police promotions, homeownership dream realized and more.
Projects in the works
We always strive to stretch your tax dollars as far as possible. That’s why we make appropriation requests of the Florida Legislature. My administration identified the projects the State could potentially help us fund and the City Council agreed to the plan at its Dec. 3 meeting.
In the upcoming 2026 session, the requests are: $750,000 to repair culverts and pedestrian bridges along Central Park Place; $640,000 for Cleary Boulevard drainage improvements; $200,000 for license plate readers; $3 million for the Midtown Bridge, which will span the North New River to alleviate traffic on University Drive and Pine Island Road; $215,000 for traffic calming at NW 5th Street and NW 46th Avenue, an often-used cut-through in Park East; and $340,000 to repair two pedestrian bridges at Volunteer Park that extend into a wetlands area.
State Representatives Gottlieb, Dunkley and Campbell have already filed the bills for city’s appropriations. All requests are evaluated while making the State’s budget. The governor, though, can veto even appropriations approved by the legislature.
More police promotions
The retirement of Police Chief Howard Harrison has created a domino effect.
Jeffrey Schlegel (center) has been promoted from Deputy Chief to Police Chief; Seymour Council (right) moves up from Captain into a Deputy Chief role; Joseph Cuccia (left) is now a Captain.
A packed police meeting room witnessed the oaths on Monday.
Broward Convention Center update
County Commissioner Hazelle Rogers, who represents the northern part of Plantation, visited the Dec. 3 City Council meeting. Her focus was to update everyone on the status of the major project at the Broward Convention Center.
The newly expanded Convention Center is now open and an elevated bypass road leading to it is completed. The future 801-room Omni Fort Lauderdale Hotel will open within a few months.

Business tax receipt talks
Planning, Zoning and Economic Development Director Dan Holmes led a workshop Dec. 3 offering options to adjust our business tax receipt rules.
Plantation businesses must register with the city annually, and some have noted that our process is cumbersome. Staff attended the State FABTO Conference for ideas on how to improve it and we want to do that very soon.

Library volunteers raise $15K
The Friends of the Helen B. Hoffman Plantation Library gathered at the Plantation Historical Museum on Monday, Dec. 8, for their annual holiday luncheon.
As part of the celebration, Jill Klein, the President of the organization, presented Monika Knapp, Library Director, with a donation of $15,000 for the library.
The Friends of the Library raised the funds through their Used Book Sales, which are held two weekends a month (with items in the library lobby as well). The funds are used for books and programs at the library.
Don’t miss the used books sales in 2026 starting with Jan. 2 - 3 and 16 - 17. Fridays are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A dream realized: Plantation residents find a home and hope
Deborah and Tiffany stand proudly in front of their homes in Plantation. Both are the beneficiaries of the City of Plantation Housing Assistance Programs.
“I don’t know how I would have been able to get hurricane windows,” said Deborah, a Minor Home Repair assistance recipient.
The City’s First-Time Homebuyer Program supports the journey to homeownership every step of the way.

“You’ve been a guiding light, especially during challenging times”, said Tiffany, “I encourage anyone to take the time to do your research, and make your dream become a reality.”
We are happy for Deborah and Tiffany as they build community connections and deepen their roots in Plantation.
