‘Washed up’ is a good thing
A new 3,800 square foot laundromat is coming to Jacaranda Square shopping center at 1843-1845 N. Pine Island Road.
Interestingly, The Laundry Companies needed approval from the City Council. Laundromats are permitted by code to occupy the end of a strip plaza, but this one will be in the middle. That’s a conditional use, meaning the Council vets it first.
The owners expect that the patrons of surrounding businesses will use the state-the-art laundromat while shopping or dining. The facility will have 40 washers and 20 dryers and employ 10 to 12 attendants rotating between 2 to 3 shifts.
Horland is president
Denise Horland has been selected to serve as the City Council President for this year and Erik Anderson is President Pro Tem.
Horland is the President of the Broward League of Cities, serves on the Florida League of Cities (FLC) board of directors, as a vice-chair of the advocacy committee and a member of the policy committee. She represents the City of Plantation on multiple regional boards, such as the Broward County Planning Council, the South Florida Regional Planning Council, Broward County Water Advisory Board, and Solid Waste Authority of Broward County.
Horland has received the FLC Home Rule Hero award for six years in a row for her advocacy efforts aimed at protecting the city’s ability to make local decisions locally.

Examining business tax receipts
Wednesday, Dec. 3 at 5 p.m. we will have a City Council workshop to discuss which entities are required to have the City of Plantation local business tax receipt, the process for obtaining such receipts and the enforcement of registration rules.
Current code states that all licensed professionals must register annually and have their own business tax receipt. That means an office with five attorneys must register as a business, but the attorneys themselves also must obtain a local tax receipt.
Council members inquired whether other cities have such a requirement, among other aspects of business tax receipts, and our Planning, Zoning and Economic Development Department has prepared details for a discussion.
Other City Council topics
The last City Council meeting of the year is at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, and is stacked with activity.
County Commissioner Hazelle Rogers will give an update of advancement in her district, which includes the northern part of Plantation.
Contract for Deicke auditorium roof replacement and structural repairs is up for approval, along with the city’s comprehensive plan.
Representatives proposing a Powerhouse Gym at 1801 N. Pine Island Road and representatives proposing Waters Edge residential development at 1600 S.W. 80th Terrace will be asking for approval.
