New Building Official, New playground, School Board member visit and more.
New Building Official approved
Carmen Hurlbut has been approved as the city’s new Building Official, replacing Bill Gale, who retired.
Supportive employees packed the Council Chambers on Oct. 8 as Council voted unanimously for approval.
The department will also have a new name: Building Safety. That title better reflects to the public the department’s primary objective. Our vetting of new construction and renovations is quite particular because we want a safe environment to meet the rules mandated by the Florida Building Code.
Carmen joined the city in 2018 as a Structural Building Inspector and worked extensively in the private industry before that. She was Broward Chief Building Inspector of the Year in 2022.

Bulk trash crackdown
A point of pride in our city is that it is “clean and green.” But we are having problems with residents putting their bulk trash out before their pickup time.
The earliest permitted is the Saturday before your scheduled pickup. Don’t just rely on seeing your neighbor’s bulk, please.
It is especially important that bulk debris does not block the stormwater drains, as we are in the rainy season, or access to the fire hydrants.
Code enforcement will be cracking down on this. To report a potential violation, call 954-797-2267 or email askcode@psd.plantation.org.
Liberty Tree playground plan
The City Council approved the first step in a significant upgrade to Liberty Tree Park: an inclusive playground.
The state approved a $200,000 grant that will help defray costs for the playground, which is $819,386. Miracle Recreation Equipment Company will provide the playground.
But to make the playground more accessible to children with special needs, the city needs to make other changes. The parking lot, currently grass, will be paved, and more walkways and concrete pathways leading to the playground will be built.

Plantation Pointe approved
The Council approved a site plan, elevations and landscape plan for Plantation Pointe Midtown Residential, which would add residential to a bustling block. The property is at 7510 W. Sunrise Blvd.
The property is commonly known as the Motorola property. But in recent years, a strip of stores featuring Habit Burger and others opened, and then earlier this year, a Chick-Fil-A, Just Salad, and Cava have been added.
The site plan is for a 300-unit, six-story structure. Twenty percent of the units will be at a “moderate affordable” rate, which is 80 to 120 percent of the county’s area median income.

Big crowd for principal
Council chambers were packed to witness a proclamation honoring Marlen Veliz, who is retiring as Mirror Lake Elementary principal.
Former and current teachers, administrators and students stood and applauded after Council President Louis Reinstein read the proclamation.
“While I may be retired, my heart will always be in the halls of our schools,” Veliz said.
Cervera visits Council
School Board member Adam Cervera visited City Hall during the Oct. 8 Council meeting and gave updates on District 6 schools, which are basically those south of Broward Boulevard: South Plantation High, Seminole Middle, Plantation Park Elementary and Tropical Elementary.
“One of my jobs is to stay as engaged as possible,” said Cervera, who was appointed by Gov. Ron DeSantis after Brenda Fam resigned. “I want to know people’s thoughts.”
