Budget approved: Only the necessities
I’m happy to say that the City Council followed up on its September 10 action and on September 17 passed our FY 2025-2026 budget, which begins on October 1, 2025.
After conversing with Council members in our July meeting, staff and I worked to provide a budget that includes the first millage decrease in eight years. The millage rate had been 5.800, but this year it drops to 5.700.
More importantly, we vetted every dollar. We’ll complete the necessary maintenance – letting our assets deteriorate is costlier in the long run – and have balanced amenities with the cost of police, fire and EMS.

Big meeting Thursday in the Acres
Earlier this year, the Plantation Acres Improvement District (PAID) board voted to let their residents choose whether to keep PAID in place or disband and pay the city to manage its drainage challenges. That changed last week, when the district’s board reversed that vote. (The city is neutral on the topic.)
But PAID members acknowledge that vote could have been better publicized to residents. All this is a long way of saying there is a PAID meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday, September 25 at the PAID building, whereupon another vote on the topic will be held.
Temple Kol Ami celebrates growth
The Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El campus, which includes Imagine charter school’s Plantation campus, celebrated the end of an expansion project.
There are now 10 new classrooms and a 3,000-square-foot cafeteria for Imagine, as well as a chapel, an event space and new classrooms for Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El, which has its own early childhood program.
School group, Mayor earn awards
Plantation High’s SWAT (Students Working Against Tobacco) was lauded as club of the year, and yours truly was named Government Official of the Year at the annual Tobacco-Free Partnership of Broward ceremony Thursday.
The group has been active in informing classmates of the dangers of tobacco, including not only smoking, but also vaping, which is popular among teens.
The Plantation High’s SWAT club visited with Parks and Recreation Director Patricia O’Toole and I earlier this year to discuss best practices for nonsmoking ordinances in parks. I’m pleased to say we have kept in contact and they apparently appreciate my ideas.
