Habitat approved
The City Council approved a plan to donate a property on Hiatus Road to Habitat for Humanity of Broward to build 16 townhomes on the site. Habitat for Humanity has facilitated such arrangements in several Broward Cities as a way to create affordable homes for qualified applicants. Eligible applicants must earn between 60%-120% of median family income within Broward County and not own a homestead property.
Part of the agreement calls for Plantation employees, residents, public school teachers and first responders in Broward County to get a head start on applying.

RaceTrac proposal voted down
The City Council rejected an application to build a RaceTrac convenience store/gas station on the southeast corner of Pine Island Road and Sunrise Boulevard. The July 23 meeting drew a large crowd, particularly with residents of Lauderdale West, who argued a spillover effect would harm their community.
The Council vote was unanimous.
Rescue crews recognized
On August 23, the city recognized the crews that were on scene on Nov. 26, 2023, rescuing Samantha Thomson from a serious accident on Pine Island Road and Gatehouse.
The crews extricated Ms. Thomson from her car and transported her to Broward General Hospital. She has lower-extremity paralysis, but is optimistic and has repeatedly thanked EMS and Fire Rescue for their efforts.
Plantation High School ROTC
Our Public Works Department honored members of the Plantation High School ROTC at the Aug. 13 City Council meeting. The group volunteered to help the department’s sandbag distribution operation in July and filled over 2,000 sandbags for our residents.
Public Works Community Relations Coordinator Felix Casado made the presentation.

Harrison retiring
Plantation Police Chief Howard Harrison is retiring later this year. His final day will be Dec. 5, exactly 42 years to the day from when he began with Plantation PD.
Harrison grew up in Plantation, attended South Plantation High, and worked his way up to chief. We have begun seeking his replacement.

Items of interest on Wednesday’s agenda include the purchase of a new fire truck, design of pedestrian beacon on Cleary Boulevard and 91st Avenue, and an evaluation of roadway improvements on NW 5th Street and Northwest 46th Avenue, the main thoroughfare in the Park East neighborhood.
We will also be poring over details of a proposed residential project at 8190 W. Sunrise Blvd. The project, called The Residence at Plantation Square, likely will help the city toward our goal of increasing the amount of affordable housing in our city. See the whole agenda via Plantation.org.
