Longest day of play
Friday, June 20, is the summer solstice, and we’re celebrating with the Longest Day of Play.
Free activities begin at sunrise with a walk around Central Park and extend all the way to a 7 p.m. family Zumba party at the Plantation Community Center.
Some activities will be self-guided, while others will require pre-registration. Go to plantation.org/events to view details and register.

City holiday Thursday
City offices are closed Thursday to observe Juneteenth. Holiday hours are in effect at our parks, meaning most facilities are open 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., with tennis open until 5 p.m.
We held our Juneteenth commemoration events on Saturday, but other municipalities have theirs scheduled for Thursday. That includes a 10 a.m. parade Thursday at Hollywood’s Washington Park & Sports Fields, 5199 Pembroke Road. There will also be music, a car show, vendors and food trucks. Visit hollywoodfl.org.
Parks
Plantation Woods visitors have been bemoaning since April the removal of a shade structure at one of its major playgrounds. There was a structural issue with the support of the shade canopy that required the shade to be removed for safety reasons.
Because each structure is a custom size, the replacement needed custom manufacturing.
The good news is we’re awaiting its arrival and reinstallation any day now. We’ll let you know on social media the minute it’s restored.

Trash Workshop
The City Council and the public will receive an update on a countywide trash and recycling plan developed by Broward Solid Waste Authority. Assistant City Administrator Carole Morris will speak on the topic at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 25. The City Council meeting will follow.
You can view an update on the status of the plan on the Sun-Sentinel website.
Sandbag distribution
We will again distribute sandbags for those needing protection from potential flooding during hurricane season.
As we did last year, we prefer to run our operation “in blue skies,” i.e. way before the storm is coming.
So sandbags will be available from Monday to Saturday starting July 1 at our Public Works compound. For more details or questions visit plantation.org/sandbags.

Freebee gearing up
A free ride service in Plantation’s Midtown area is slated to begin July 1, and you might be seeing test cars out a few days earlier.
It’s called Freebee and mirrors operations many cities have. You download the Freebee app and an electric vehicle will pick you up and drop you off anywhere in Midtown (the area between Pine Island Road and University Drive, anywhere south of Cleary Boulevard).
Elected officials are expected to participate in a ribbon-cutting on July 1 at Pine Island Park.
Eye On Water
Curious about how much water you’re using each day? With EyeOnWater, you can track your usage, spot unusual activity, and even set up leak alerts—all from your smartphone. Signing up is easy at www.eyeonwater.com/signup.

North Acres Park opens
City Council and I were excited to participate in the grand opening event for North Acres Park Saturday, which was well-attended by nearby residents and others.
Plantation voters approved a $60 million bond in spring 2017 and $517,000 for a park in Plantation Acres was among the items listed on campaign literature. But park plans were delayed until 2023, when we began conversing with residents to see what they’d want in a park. City staff also began studying the property and discovered a substantial amount of demucking and draining would be necessary, significantly driving up the cost.
On July 24, 2024, the City Council approved $3.4 million for the park and we broke ground last fall.
The result is a 15-acre natural area, with a fountain in the center. A playground is expected to be installed in November.
