Utility box relocated, resurfaced basketball courts, roadwork on Pine Island road and more.
Utility drop box relocated
The drop box for those who prefer to hand-deliver their utility bill payments has been moved behind City Hall.
Drivers in the previous spot, in front of City Hall, had to reach across the seat to the passenger-side window or worse - drive the wrong way through our parking lot. The new spot will be on the left side for drivers as they traverse the circular driveway in the back.
Signage is in place to guide our customers to the new location.

Sports courts resurfaced
Our Parks and Recreation Department is leading several sports court resurfacing projects.
The outdoor basketball courts at Central Park are getting a fresh look and new fencing. Work began Tuesday and temporary fencing has been placed around the courts until the new fencing goes up. The basketball courts at Volunteer Park are also being resurfaced.
We anticipate these two locations will be open by June 7, barring any weather delays. The basketball courts at Park East Park and the hockey rink at Central Park have also been resurfaced, and weather permitting, are likely dry enough to enjoy.
Roadwork on North Pine Island
Broward County is doing a major bridge rehabilitation project in Plantation to address structural issues. There will be lane closures for four weeks on North Pine Island Road in the northernmost part of the city when a guardrail is being installed and for some other work.
Improvement efforts on a bridge north of Sunrise Boulevard will last through December.
Work will be performed on the underside of the bridge using floating platforms in the canal, thereby alleviating significant traffic disruptions except for four weeks needed to replace expansion joints.

New ER breaks ground on SR 7
HCA Westside broke ground on a new emergency room on State Road 7 last week. The industry term hospital use is “freestanding emergency room.” That means it has the same services as a regular hospital emergency room, including board-certified ER-trained doctors. But there is no hospital attached. If necessary, patients can be transported to a full-service hospital.
HCA’s goal is to open in January 2026. The official title is HCA Florida Plantation Emergency and the address is 4100 NW Fourth St.
School enrollment decrease
I was among the mayors and city managers invited to a roundtable discussion with Broward Schools Superintendent Howard Hepburn and staff. They say they have completed phase one of “Redefining Our Schools” – namely, approving some expansion of schools to either K-8 or 6-12.
The state predicts Broward public school enrollment will decrease by another 8,000 this year and the time is right to combine (close) some schools, Hepburn said. The good part is he’s willing to have a dialogue with city leaders and residents of the affected schools.

Rep. Campbell earns honor
State Rep. Darryl Campbell, whose district includes the north and east portions of Plantation, was among those honored at a luncheon promoting mental health.
Mental Health America of Southeast Florida hosted a luncheon at Jacaranda Country Club recognizing six people for their contributions to mental health. Campbell is a licensed mental health counselor.
Each of these outstanding individuals has made a lasting impact through their dedication to mental health advocacy, critical service provision, and community empowerment. Their leadership and commitment continue to drive meaningful change in Southeast Florida.
