Budget discussion Wednesday
City department heads will give the Council an overview of their budget priorities at a 5:30 p.m. workshop Wednesday, May 21. The public is invited.
We work on our budget almost year-round before it takes effect on Oct. 1. By now, department heads have requested any additional personnel positions they might need and my administration has given its tentative approval/disapproval. On Wednesday, we’ll hear about what big-ticket items are to be considered.
Budgeting is more difficult this year because there are many revenue uncertainties emanating from our state government. But we’re nervously planning the best we can.
The regular City Council meeting follows at 6:30 p.m. Read the agenda here.
Stitching a project together
We’ll have a brief ceremony at 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 21 on the City Hall steps to celebrate the creation of a public art tapestry.
Council member Denise Horland worked with Broward artist Magda Love and they rallied volunteers, then used discarded materials to create a two-story display highlighting environmental concerns.
The tapestry mural of flora and fauna is called “Branching Out.” See the video here.

Deep discussion on plans
The City Council and I have been wanting to modernize two significant policy documents for some time and both will be up for discussion during the Planning and Zoning Board meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 20.
One of the topics is the City’s Comprehensive Plan – our roadmap for the city’s future development, housing and infrastructure planning, and long-term economic and environmental sustainability. Parking and some zoning requirements are the other discussion subjects. It’s a special Planning and Zoning Board meeting, with the idea being to provide time for lengthy discussion.
Our Comprehensive Plan hasn’t been updated in years and the Planning, Zoning, and Economic Development Director Danny Holmes recently finished his draft of a 242-page document. He coordinated his work with Broward County’s Land Use Plan.
Meanwhile, Assistant Planning, Zoning, and Economic Development Director Michael Alpert has been evaluating requirements for parking and other zoning restrictions. Alpert and I feel that, in some cases, they are excessive.
Here are the backup documents, if you’d like to read them before the meeting.

Library friends’ big donation
The Friends of the Helen B. Hoffman Library installed new officers May 12 and had a nice gift for the library: A check for $29,961.
The money helped provide a circulation desk for the children’s room and a pilot program for five hot spot devices that families can check out to provide them internet services elsewhere.
Meanwhile, Take Care Tuesdays is the fourth Tuesday of each month. It’s BYOB (Bring Your Own Book). The idea is to share thoughts on your favorite books. It’s at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 27, this month.
