C’mon and take a free ride
The City Council approved a plan for microtransit in the Midtown area, authorizing staff to negotiate with a company called FreeBee.
Many cities now have microtransit programs, where residents use an app to order a pick up and drop off within a defined area for free using electric vehicles. You may have seen some golf-cart-like vehicles operating in low speed areas by the beach. Ours are the full size traditional electric vehicles. The fleet will also include ADA accessible ones.
We are working with FreeBee and hope to be offering rides by summer.

Liberty to have accessibility for all
The city approved civil engineering services for a makeover at Liberty Tree Park, 7421 NW 5th St. The state is providing a $200,000 grant toward an inclusive playground that makes features more accessible for children with physical and mental challenges.
The parking lot and walkways, for example, will need a firmer surface for wheelchairs to traverse to the playground. Before we make these improvements, we need highly technical help with design, geotechnical services, construction plans and bidding assistance.
Kimley-Horn and Associates was hired to perform the services for $184,210.
Not out of the woods on trimming
We know we are behind on trimming the city-owned trees, such as in swales, so the Council authorized hiring EDJ Tree Service to be used as needed.
Total aggregate expenditures may not exceed $500,000.
Based on the partial completion of city tree inventory, one prediction is that the city may have up to 30,000 trees that are Public Works’ responsibility. You also may have noted that Public Works is removing swale trees that are continually uprooting our sidewalks and roads, and damaging utility and stormwater infrastructure. Better suitable trees will eventually be placed in those areas, where feasible.

Plantation Middle school student honored at Mayor's Gala
A Plantation Middle School student was featured in the United Way’s annual fund-raising gala Saturday at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.
Darin Reyes was the subject of a video shown during the Mayor’s Gala. He spoke about how he had been considering suicide before Peer Counseling Teacher Pamela Van Horn steered him to a United Way program.
Moments later, an auctioneer asked for donations to United Way. The total soared above $250,000 in less than 15 minutes, putting a big smile on Darin’s face.

RaceTrac proposal at Planning and Zoning Board May 6
A proposal to build a RaceTrac gas station and convenience store at the southeast corner of Pine Island Road and Sunrise Boulevard is set to be evaluated by the Planning and Zoning Board at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 6.
A staff report has recommended denial. Planning and Zoning Board is an advisory body, so the applicant can still eventually proceed to make a request for approval in front of the City Council, regardless of the board’s decision.
RaceTrac was scheduled Nov. 19, 2024, to come to the Planning and Zoning Board but pulled back on its application.
