Trash plan stresses cooperation
The county is trying to reach a recycling rate of 75 percent, although some endeavors will take years to implement, said Todd Storti, Executive Director of Broward County’s recently formed Solid Waste Disposal and Recyclable Materials Processing Authority (SWA).
Storti led a workshop Wednesday, March 12, describing options being considered. The SWA, a group of leaders from Broward County and 28 cities, is developing a master plan it hopes to complete in April, including a 40-year plan.
Each city will keep its own system for collecting and hauling away household and yard waste, bulk trash and recyclables. Together the 28 cities and the county will determine the best way to manage our solid waste and recyclables.

Zeman working on school plan
School Board member Dr. Allen Zeman spoke with the City Council on Wednesday, March 12, saying his goal is “to create a better school system.” The city has nearly 9,500 students in public schools that, like schools throughout the county, could be affected by declining enrollment.
“Repurposing is real,” he said, noting that out of 206 schools in Broward, statistics indicate a need to close 33. “But I don’t want do it all in one year.”
He also urged residents and elected officials to push for an earlier approval of students who would like to take an empty school bus seat, but are not eligible because they live closer than the required 2-mile distance. Currently “Empty Seat Applications” are processed after October 1.

Positive comments at Broward Workshop
Money is still flowing into Florida, noted Florida Chamber of Commerce President Mark Wilson, who presented information at the annual Broward Workshop State of the County gathering, held this year at the Broward Convention Center.
“Income migration” was reported to be $36.1 billion in 2021-22, the most recent year with data available. New York lost the most income to Florida, $5.9 billion.
He stated that business challenges include workforce development, workforce housing, runaway litigation, insurance costs and infrastructure.
