Live outdoor music Friday and Saturday
It’s a big weekend for music with events on Friday and Saturday.
It starts with our monthly Rock the Park at 7 p.m. Friday, March 7 at Pine Island Park. The band is Sippin Fire, which plays a mix of rock from various artists. Food trucks begin serving at 6 p.m.
A quick side note: I’m seeing balloons – the ones you can buy at Publix and party stores – frequenting our park, and sometimes slipping away into the skies. Balloons are not allowed in our parks because of environmental concerns. (Please don’t put me in a bad spot trying to police on a fun night. Thanks.)

Then from 5 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Saturday, March 8, the Plantation Chamber of Commerce presents a Celebrate Plantation: Moonlight Concert and Business Expo at the Fountains, 801 S. University Drive.
There will be business vendor booths and music, headlined by Only in America, a band playing the songs of the country duo Brooks and Dunn. (Fun fact: “Only in America” is one of their songs.) The band is set to start at 6:30 p.m.
Face painters, robot stilt walkers, food vendors and a performance by Miss Tracy Sings promise a night of entertainment for the entire family.

Colorectal cancer awareness
South Plantation High student Garbriel Gajdek spearheaded a proclamation declaring March as Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Gajdek is a junior advocate for Fight Colorectal Cancer. His mother was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer at the age of 40 but has recovered and been cancer-free for the past five years.
“It is my goal to inform people that colorectal cancer is no longer an old person disease,” he said. “Anyone can get a devastating diagnosis.” Go to FightColorectalCancer.org.

Solid waste workshop
The City Council will hold a workshop to discuss solid waste and recycling. If you have been following events in Miami-Dade or Broward counties in recent months, you know that the issue of where and how we dispose of our garbage, and what comprises “garbage”, has reached critical mass.
Todd Storti, executive director of Broward County’s recently formed Solid Waste Disposal and Recyclable Materials Processing Authority (SWA), will lead the workshop. The SWA, a group of leaders from Broward County and 28 cities, is developing a master plan of operations. It will guide the SWA as to the types and capacity of disposal facilities needed. The master plan is anticipated to be completed by August of this year.
Mr. Storti’ s presentation will include general information about the SWA, its mission and the status of the master plan.
40 years for Danny Pollio
Utilities Director Danny Pollio marked his 40th anniversary with the city.
On Feb. 26, he was lauded at the City Council meeting with an outpouring of support from his employees and colleagues.
The next day he barbecued ribs, chicken and pork for his Utilities Department and guests.
The barbecue also marked the ribbon-cutting of a new generator storage building adjacent to Plantation Water Treatment Plant. Congrats Danny!
