Jennifer Andreu, Timothy Fadgen and Louis Reinstein will be sworn in to their City Council seats at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, at City Hall. The public is invited.
Andreu and Fadgen, both first elected in 2020, automatically held their seats when no opposition filed to run by the June deadline. Reinstein, first elected in 2022 to complete the seat I vacated to run for mayor, won his seat in the Nov. 5 election.
Interestingly, other government agencies have picked the same date for their ceremonies: School Board at 9 a.m. at Dillard High School and the County Commission at 10 a.m. at 115 S. Andrew Ave., Fort Lauderdale.

The city’s Planning and Zoning Department will review an application to build a RaceTrac service station at the southeast corner of Pine Island Road and Sunrise Boulevard.
Gas stations are known as “conditional use” endeavors, meaning the City Council must approve their implementation. The Planning and Zoning Board is a preliminary review and the applicant can still make a proposal to City Council even if the Board recommends denial.
Go to our agenda page to view the proposal and leave your eComment for the board. The Board meeting is at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, at City Hall.

The Broward County Commission appeared to vote on Tuesday to build “transitional” housing for the homeless at a site in Dania Beach. Cost is $14 million for an estimated 100 homes. The commission also discussed a parcel in Broadview Park but there were no plans to move forward. However, Sun Sentinel reported that the county ultimately ended up with no approval of the plan.
Plantation city administration is monitoring the county’s decision and will continue to express opposition to using the Broadview Park site, which is in the middle of a single-family community. We also believe such a project would violate the state statutes. Should the discussion escalate we will be sure to notify the public.
Neighborhood residents, dignitaries and elected officials flocked to Kingsley Park in the Park East neighborhood last week for the ribbon-cutting of the One Love mural created by artist Cey Adams. Uplighting makes the mural visible to walkers and nearby motorists in the evening.
Long-time residents remarked that the mural is part of a continual transformation of a site where a former Texaco gas station sat, and credit the city’s Glendon Hall for pushing forward the improvements.
"In All Things Give Thanks" is the message for this year’s service conducted by the Plantation Interfaith Association of Clergy. It will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, at Plantation United Methodist Church, 1001 NW 70th Avenue. A reception and socializing will follow. Plantation United Methodist’s Rev. Dr. Marta Burke is now the president of the association.
The evening includes music from representatives from the various houses of worship. The community leaders use this event as a way for even those not belonging to a specific house of worship to enjoy the spirit of Thanksgiving.
A company that helps businesses process credit card transactions held a ribbon-cutting Tuesday to mark its growth in Plantation. Originally founded in New York, Merchant Industry, which opened their Florida headquarters earlier this year at 150 S. Pine Island Road, invited me to a ribbon-cutting and tour. The company overall plans to employ about 1,000 with about 100 jobs open immediately.
The company got a nice writeup in the SunSentinel.
Tropical Jewelry and Gems, 8968 Cleary Blvd., will have a grand opening from 2-4 p.m. Saturday. The owners describe the store as “a quaint, little jewelry shop that also has crystals, beads, fossils, cards and gifts.”
