Parks Director, Florida City Government Week, Many Events and more.
Patricia “Trish” O’Toole is the city’s new Parks and Recreation Director. The City Council voted Wednesday to approve administration’s recommendation that she be promoted from her assistant director position.
Trish worked her way up. She started as a parks site manager in 2003, then advanced to facilities manager, athletics supervisor, superintendent of recreation and then to assistant director. She replaces Phil Goodrich, who retired earlier this year.
A large group of parks employees attended Wednesday’s council meeting and applauded loudly when the council voted to confirm the recommendation.

South Plantation High teacher Jennifer McGonigle-Collins is this year’s honoree in the Broward County Pioneer Day recognition ceremony.
Collins, who teaches American Sign Language, student government and yearbook, has served the community with home holiday lights, honored veterans through the South Florida Honor Flight program and created events to recognize emergency workers. The South Plantation High staff elected her as Teacher of the Year in 2005, 2009, 2015, and in 2009 she was a finalist for the Broward County Teacher of the Year.
The 48th annual Pioneer Day in Broward County will be held on Saturday, Nov. 9, at the Tamarac Community Center. The event will include a free reception and recognition ceremony, live music, and refreshments. The Broward County Historic Preservation Board and the Cultural Division hosts the event, which rotates among the county's 31 municipalities each year.

This week is Florida City Government Week, as deemed by the Florida League of Cities.
We’re excited to shine a light on something truly important: your voices and opinions! Through quick daily videos, we’re recapping the results of our recent resident survey, showcasing what matters most to our community—whether it’s how much you love living here, the fantastic work our city does with parks and public safety, or the ways we’re keeping you informed.

I was excited to speak to students from Seminole Middle School and Plantation Middle School, who gathered at South Plantation High for their induction into Mentoring Tomorrow’s Leaders, a countywide initiative.
MTL is peer-to-peer mentoring and student leadership program that serves youth who are at-risk for not graduating and/or remaining in school. The program aims to decrease dropout rates, particularly among minority males, to ensure successful school graduation. Seminole Middle’s Stephen M. Fagan organized the event.
