School in Session, Three Restaurants Coming, Community Survey and more.
Welcome back to school, Students, Teachers, and School Staff! The start of a new academic year brings excitement, hope, and the promise of growth, learning, and achievement.
Students: Embrace the challenges and opportunities ahead. Your dedication and curiosity will unlock your full potential.
Teachers and staff: Thank you for your commitment to guiding our students. Your hard work and passion are the foundation of our educational community.
Wishing you all a fantastic school year!
Last week I attended the Superintendent’s Mayor’s Roundtable where the municipal leaders applauded the district’s A grade and learned that this year’s theme is “Believe, Empower, Achieve ONE BROWARD”.
Parents and students should be aware of the updated policy that limits access to wireless communication devices for students during instructional time unless authorized by their teacher or other school staff member. High school students should give themselves more time in the morning to go through the newly added metal detectors.

Three more restaurants are in the pipeline for Plantation, according to building permits filed in the city:
Cava Restaurant will be in the Plantation Point complex, on the east side of University Drive and south of Sunrise, at 1714 N. University Drive. There will be 18 indoor and 17 outdoor seats. They have 26 locations across the State and specialize in Mediterranean-inspired dishes.
Alacati Restaurant another Mediterranean restaurant, will be at 522 N. Pine Island, in the spot that formerly hosted a Pei Wei. There will be 93 seats indoors and 28 on the patio.
Prime K BBQ, Korean Steakhouse, will be at the former Jason’s Deli site, 1361 S. University Drive. There will be 150 indoor seats.
ETC Institute surveyed 649 residents via mail and digital platforms, and made sure all ages, races and portions of the city were fairly represented.
Ninety-two percent (!) rate Plantation as an “excellent” or “good” place to live. That beats the national average by 40 points. 86 percent say they are either “very satisfied” or “satisfied” with the quality of life in our city; same with Plantation’s overall appearance. 82 percent of respondents are either “very satisfied” or “satisfied” with the overall image of the city and the overall quality of their neighborhood.
We will soon be sharing more about the survey, but for now, click here to read the full results.
The world, and especially Plantation, can never have too many dessert options, and we gained another one with the ribbon-cutting for Bunnboh Churros. Located at Broward Mall, 8000 W. Broward Blvd, Suite 1327, across from the dining court.
Owners invited Plantation Chamber of Commerce members to “Indulge in our delicious artisan churros, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, served with a variety of sauces and toppings.” (And of course we did.)

I have been asked to provide a list of recent initiatives to the city’s Sustainability and Resiliency Advisory Board and will do so at their Monday meeting at 6:30 p.m. at City Council Chambers.
We have worked to ensure that new and renovated facilities are energy- and water-efficient, built to withstand increasing storm intensity and weather events. Emphasis on stormwater management has brought about greater protection of our resources. And we are working on a multi-modal transportation plan, which increases opportunities for bicycles and pedestrians and decreases the dependence on automobiles.
All these endeavors, of course, require a team. Public input, city staff and the City Council have made positive contributions. We will provide more updates as the focus on sustainability increases.

The Plantation Police annual report is out, and available on our website.
The report has arrest statistics for 2023 as well as a summary of initiatives across various organizational units.
What I found interesting is the variety of ways police is involved in our lives, from giving information, to community engagement to crime prevention. There is plenty to read there.
