Plantation School Progress, National Night Out, Survey Results and More.
The State’s annual list of school grades came out and there’s good news for Plantation: Our GPA is improving. Five of our 10 schools improved at least a letter grade.
This year Peters Elementary jumped to an A from a C, joining Central Park and Tropical as elementary schools earning As. Mirror Lake, Plantation Park and Plantation Elementary all received Bs.
Seminole Middle improved to a B this year, while Plantation Middle maintained its C status.
Our two high schools, Plantation High and South Plantation High, each improved a letter grade, earning Bs.
Congratulations to the principals and staff of schools in Plantation that achieved or retained their A and B ratings! And congratulations to the Broward County Public School District for earning an A!

Former Plantation resident Kassidy Cook won a silver medal in 3-meter synchronized diving at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Kassidy was born here in Plantation in 1995 to Kevin and Laura Cook. She is one of six children. Fun fact: all of the kid's first names begin with the letter "K". Her siblings are Kevin, Kara, Kelsey, Kylie, and Kendall.
In 2005 the family moved from Plantation to Texas to concentrate on the diving career of Kassidy's older sister, Kara, who later dove for Purdue University.
In addition to swimming and diving, the Cook kids were active in Plantation sports, including the PAL recreational soccer league. Kassidy played soccer until the move. Kassidy would go on to graduate from Stanford University in 2018.

At its July 24 meeting, the City Council approved an agreement with the construction company that will build the North Acres Park. Once the notice to proceed is issued, construction is planned to take about eight months. But the rainy season may cause delays.
The City Council, our City Engineer and I are excited to deliver on this promise to the community.

I joined several Broward County mayors in writing letters of support for a project by the Metropolitan Planning Organization. The Broward MPO has developed a master plan to place electric vehicle (EV) charging stations throughout the county.
The federal government has created a grant program for such plans and the Broward MPO is seeking its funds.
My thinking is that such a project helps our residents not only within our city, but also when we are visiting other places in the county.

Plantation’s 2024 Resident Survey results are in! Big thanks to the residents who were selected as a part of the random sample and took their time to give us feedback so that we can have reliable statistically valid data.
We are excited about the results. We meet or exceed state and national scores in almost all of the areas compared. We also received a list of things to work on to ensure that our priorities are closely aligned with the community needs. Luckily for us, these are already on our radar and a part of our strategic plan.
The City’s consultant will present the survey results at the Aug. 7 City Council meeting. Join us in the Chambers or watch at home.

Parks & Recreation Month
July was Parks and Recreation Month and more than two dozen employees turned up to accept a proclamation from the city. With 42 parks and programs for all ages and interests, our Parks and Recreation Department is one of major contributors to the unparalleled quality of life in Plantation. It’s no surprise, considering how many employees showed their pride in their job last Wednesday.
Broward Reads
Broward Reads was recognized for advancing the quest for grade-level competency in reading for Broward children. Broward Reads is a collaborative initiative between the School Board, Broward County, Children’s Service Council and Broward United Way.
Councilmember Horland has long been engaged with this initiative and City Council officially appointed her as Plantation’s representative to Broward Reads on July 24.
