New Playground, Tennis Championship, North Acres Park, Water Meters and more.
Construction has begun and a playground is expected to be in place at Pine Island Park by the end of August.
The playground was in the plans about five years ago when the refurbishment of the park began, but other costs left no money for it. The Parks and Recreation Department applied for and received a grant that is now helping pay for it.
Meanwhile, two adjacent playgrounds will be back operating soon. Jack Carter Harmony playground, which was damaged, is in permitting and the equipment for Seminole Park is expected to arrive in about four weeks. Then, construction will begin.

I was delighted to be the official coin-tosser for the Girls’ 14 USTA National Clay Court Championships at the Veltri Tennis Center. It is the 35th year the tournament has been held in Plantation.
The event drew 190 players from across the country. Alison Wang of San Jose, California, was the winner.
Another step for North Acres Park: The City Council will be asked to consider approval of an agreement with Ryan Incorporated Southern to build the park north of Sunrise Boulevard and west of 118th Avenue.
Cost is $3.45 million.
The long-awaited park was delayed while water management concerns were being resolved.

We’re getting ready to kick off the last phase of our water meter upgrades, so you may soon see our contractor National Metering Services, Inc. in your neighborhood. They will need access to the meter box, but not inside anyone’s home or business. National Metering Service Inc. technicians, wearing highly visible safety gear and uniforms, are expected to perform meter box replacements in various areas of the City over the next seven months.
Once the project is complete, all our water customer accounts will have access to EyeOnWater, which allows you to monitor your consumption and set up notifications for leak alerts.
For questions about this project (officially known as AMI Phase II), please call Plantation Utilities at 954-797-2209 or email water@plantation.org.

Capriotti's, known for its "Thanksgiving on a roll," is set to open in Plantation. The sandwich chain is popular in the Northeast, but this will be only the second South Florida location.
"The Bobbie" sandwich is their most popular, consisting of slow-roasted turkey, cranberry sauce and stuffing.
Capriotti's will be at 1023 S. University Drive, at Market on University and is holding their grand opening Tuesday, July 23.
Here is a recent article by New Times Miami explaining the hullabaloo.
